Julie Andrews stars in this biopic of the celebrated stage star Gertrude Lawrence. puckish Daniel Massey plays Noel Coward, Lawrence's childhood chum. the movie staggers around between the big production numbers. Its social message--independent Lawrence just needed a man to boss her around--was just as grating in the age of The Graduate as it is now. In this biography of legendary entertainer Gertrude Lawrence, her early, determined attempts at beginning a showbiz career are examined, as well as her rise to fame on two continents. A musical biography of British music hall and Broadway star Gertrude Lawrence, STAR! is a convincing and entertaining film, featuring an impressive score. The immensely talented Julie Andrews plays Lawrence, a beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely independent woman who will do anything for her career (including leaving her daughter and husband). Her early adventures in the music hall chorus and her later involvement in British high society are chronicled in this lush film that, though it received several Academy Award nominations, was not appreciated by the public until some 30 years after its original showing, when it was rereleased. One of the most interesting, heartwarming, and perhaps most famous aspects of Lawrence's story was her lifelong friendship with playwright Nöel Coward (Daniel Massey, the real-life grandson of Coward), which the film accurately portrays. STAR! also shows the lowlights of Lawrence's life, including her strained relationship with her daughter Pamela (Jenny Agutter), her involvement with such men as American actor Charles Fraser (Robert Reed) and English nobleman Sir Anthony Spencer (Michael Craig), and the financial difficulties she amassed from her extravagant lifestyle. The film used 10,000 costumed extras, and 125 original costumes were designed at an approximate cost of $350,000.
The film was conceived especially for Julie Andrews by Robert Wise and Saul Chaplin.

$10.25 This characteristically spectacular Ross Hunter musical production, a parody of the films of the 1920s, stars Julie Andrews as the eager young Millie Dillmount. She arrives in New York City in the 1920s intent on a job as a secretary with a rich, handsome, eligible boss. Deciding to adopt the appearance of a flapper, she has her hair bobbed. At a women's hotel run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), who also runs a white slavery ring, she meets the beautiful, naive Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie does get a job with a handsome boss, Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but he has eyes only for Miss Dorothy, and Millie is forced to make do with Jimmy Smith (James Fox), a paper-clip salesman. After they've returned to the hotel from attending a party at the Long Island estate of wealthy Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Millie finds that Miss Dorothy has disappeared. When she and Jimmy detect the scent of opium in Mrs. Meers's room, they realize she has a sideline. The valiant Jimmy must go in drag to uncover the whereabouts of the white slavers' hideout. The cast and crew perform admirably in this light farce that is almost too sweet for its own good.

$17.29 Muisc & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Score conducted by David Caddick.
Recorded live at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. Includes a book by John Weidman & liner notes by Frank Rich.
The musical Bounce, with songs by Stephen Sondheim and a libretto by John Weidman (the two had previously collaborated on Pacific Overtures and Assassins), played for six weeks at the Goodman Theater in Chicago (June 30-August 10, 2003), followed by four weeks at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. (October 21-November 16, 2003). These runs may have been considered tryouts for Broadway, but during the D.C. engagement, the producers announced that the show would not be going to New York. They blamed a lack of theater space, but observers noted the negative reviews Bounce had received. For most shows that close out of town, that would have been the end of that, but Sondheim is such a celebrated figure in the musical theater, one whose flops (Anyone Can Whistle, Merrily We Roll Along, both of which made it to Broadway) are nearly as legendary as his hits, that Nonesuch Records recorded the show with the original cast, its commercial failure notwithstanding. Sondheim fans, who may have followed Bounce's long, tortuous gestation (which included rewrites, title changes, re-casting, workshops, and lawsuits), will welcome the result, if ...
