| | Silent Kids Tomorrow Waits CD Silent Kids Discography of CDs
Mixing the crunchy indie experimentation of Pavement with a true-blue sunny vibe, the Silent Kids throw a summertime backyard party and invite everyone from Fiver to the Mayflies USA to Grandaddy. From the upbeat groove of "Drift into the Summer" to the noisy "The Bering Sea" and the brief, in-between atmosphere sketches like "Lost in the Petrified Forest," Tomorrow Waits -- like Grandaddy's Under the Western Freeway -- only hints at the band's potential. This Atlanta group's debut was recorded to eight-track in a home studio and originally self-released in limited quantities. But the psychedelic rock -- calling it power pop would oversimplify the sound -- was worthy of full distribution and picked up by Two Sheds Music. The record may be distinctly lo-fi, but with a love of the Beatles and an array of Moog, organs, and tape loops (just listen to the bleeps on "A Great Leap Forward"), the Silent Kids have established themselves and announced that they'll really make their mark with the sophomore follow-up. ~ Charles Spano
Atlanta's entry in the field of pop psychedelia is Silent Kids, an erstwhile three-piece that's a local rising star. The original trio of Michael Oakley, Jeff Holt, and Scott Rowe made their name by putting to good use vintage equipment, makeshift home studio space, an analog eight-track recorder, and general inventiveness. The band could easily be mistaken for an Elephant Six outfit were it not for its use of soaring guitars. The band's recorded output consist of an early (and now out-of-print) EP, Radio Beams, and the 2003 full-length, Tomorrow Waits, which was re-released on Two Sheds in February 2003. $14.30 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, ...

$20.19 30 tracks, w. Walt Benton, Eddie McKinney, Charlie Gore, Jerry Parson, Ron Berry, Jerry Siefert, Jerry Fuller+
This is a pretty uneven collection, which is not surprising given the fact that the title track by Reggie Perkins is one of the coolest things here and it's from a juvenile delinquency B-movie of the same name. The Jays' "Panic Stricken" is pretty fair rock & roll, but "Jitterbug Joe" is one of those minor embarrassments of the genre, a silly novelty tune. Ronnie Allen's "High School Love" sets the middle-range here, a pleasant, serviceable but undistinguished piece of rock & roll that doesn't quite come off, missing the cues that would make it a good record. Jerry Parsons' "Undecided" represents the more countrified sound well enough, and Lee Dresser's "Thinking 'bout Your Love" is a good piece of mainstream rock & roll, with a full band (with sax). ...
