In Flames: Anders Friden (vocals); Bjorn Gelotte, Jesper Stromblad (guitar); Peter Iwers (bass); Daniel Svensson (drums). Recorded in Denmark. This release includes a bonus DVD. In Flames: Peter Iwer (bass instrument); Anders Fridén, Jesper Strömblad, Daniel Svensson. Personnel: Anders Fridén (vocals); Björn Gelotte, Jesper Strömblad (guitar); Daniel Svensson (drums); Orjan Ornkloo (programming, sampler). Audio Mixers: Anders Fridén; Daniel Bergstrand; Orjan Ornkloo. Recording information: Denmark; Dug-Out Studio. Arranger: In Flames. In Flames was certainly under the extreme-metal microscope upon the release of Soundtrack to Your Escape and its predecessor, Reroute to Remain. The band had the potential to crack the metal underground wide to the mainstream, existing on the cusp of international stardom with its progressive extrapolations upon the Swedish metal genre they helped create. Fact is, Soundtrack to Your Escape exists to further polarize In Flames' fan base -- "Touch of Red" and opening cut "F(r)iend" are their heaviest riff monsters since Colony, which blatantly contrast "The Quiet Place," which is jammed with cascading guitar melodies and a thick, sticky chorus which, in a just world, would make for a rock-radio smash. Anders Fridén is again using a myriad of vocal styles, including his mid-range death rasp (see "Dead Alone," with its old-school Swedish riffs seamlessly morphing into melodic passages), an awkward clean croon ("Like You Better Dead," "My Sweet Shadow"), and an electronically enhanced warble, all of which are multi-tracked for many choruses -- proving that Fridén may be In Flames' most powerful weapon now that the band's trademark ornate guitar flights are used somewhat sparingly. Some may cry foul when confronted by a lush ballad like "Evil in a Closet" or the relatively straightforward riffing of "Dial 595-Escape," but old-school whiners will be equally appeased with a barnburner like "In Search for I." Bottom line, In Flames are growing as songwriters with every passing release, and the debate over the style in which the tunes are conveyed really seems secondary when confronted with such a strong and cohesive album. Soundtrack to Your Escape will disappoint those looking to find fault with the leaders of the Swedish pack, while open-minded purveyors of metal will revel in the album's careful balance of credibility and accessibility. [The import digipack version includes a bonus track, "Discover Me Like Emptiness."] ~ John Serba Sweden's metal scene consistently breathes new life into a style that had long since hit a wall in many other territories. Among the most provocative and original of these acts is In Flames. The brainchild of vocalist Anders Friden and guitarist Jesper Stromblad, In Flames began in 1990, crafting a unique direction and, over time, solidifying a lineup of formidable instrumentalists, including longtime member Bjorn Gelotte (who moved from drums to guitar since joining the group). On SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE, In Flames relentlessly pushes stylistic barriers, incorporating goth, classic thrash, and death-metal elements, resulting in a distinctive blend. The heavy ballad "Evil in a Closet" begins with moody, clean vocals in the verses and unexpectedly blasts into a chorus of brutal death growls. Boasting sinister riffs in the Testament/Slayer vein, "Touch of Red" gives way to an instantly memorable chorus, while "The Quiet Place" stands as the most melodic and accessible track, with potential to expose the band to the masses.
Soundtrack To Your Escape Music Soundtrack To Your Escape Music Soundtrack To Your Escape Music Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Not as bad as people say This album really took a beating from some long time bands. I just discovered In Flames this past fall so excuse me for my newbie opinion...but this is a good album. I was sold on them from the Reroute to Remain album, and then bought up all the others. After a solid few months of listening to practically nothing but In Flames, I still find Reroute and Whoreacle to be their best work. I was not particularly fond of Colony or Clayman.
Anyway, I like this album. Sure, there are more tones of commercialism but that it not necessarily a bad thing. Their core is still there. One of the best things about this band is their ability to surprise you while maintaining a core sound that does not falter. Hail to the kings, I say. In Flames are still going strong!! IN FLAMES has certainly come far from their debut "Lunar Strain". The difference between that and the new album is whopping but if you count in every album they form a (nearly) straight line that illustrates the band’s evolution right up to this point. Sorry for the mathematics but in that light it is also evident that if you didn’t like the previous "Reroute To Remain" you most likely won’t like this one either and if you liked that album you’ll most certainly like this one as well.
But anyway...to sum it up: even though I knew what to expect from this album I was very surprised to find out how good it actually is. It’s dark, heavy yet still melodic and catchy. It’s also more Death Metal than their previous offering which is a very pleasant thing to say the least. It’s music you can both sing along to and headbang to at the same time. However, just like "Reroute" it might take a few listens for it to grow on you but when it does you’ll be more than happy for it. Now those who have completely given up hope for IF after "Clayman" and "Reroute To Remain" won’t be gaining any with "Soundtrack" either but those who liked them will be equally pleased with this one. After ten years IN FLAMES are still going strong, evolving from album to album and in my opinion they’ve yet to make a merely decent album. It’s all either good or great and this one ranks in the latter without a doubt... Submitted by jtalley (Albuquerque, NM) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
