Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Beautifully interpreted by talented opera singers Ben Heppner and Jane Eaglen amongst others, this performance of Richard Wagner's "Tristan Und Isolde" is highly moving. Recorded in 1999, the opera gained plaudits far and wide, and was considered by many viewers to be the best rendition of Wagner's work to date. Richard Wagner - Tristan Und Isolde Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Keep Your Eyes Shut This disc manages to be both impressive and infuriating. On the musical side the Metropolitan Opera fields as good an orchestra, conductor and cast as one could expect for the date (not identified by DG but said to be copyrighted in 2001). How Heppner/Eaglen stack up against Melchior/Flagstad or Nilsson/Vickers will always be a matter for debate, but on the current operatic scene it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to match the achievements recorded here in excellent surround sound.
The visual aspect is another matter. A fulsome article in the accompanying booklet makes great claims for the 1999 production (‘markedly more contemporary and European…than any of the house’s other current Wagner stagings’), but the writer’s enthusiasm is unlikely to be shared by experienced European operagoers. Many of us will recognise the usual ragbag of producer’s clichés: a predilection for geometric shapes (triangles obviously); startling light changes to signal shifts in mood (screaming orange-red when the lovers swallow the potion); trap doors; miniature buildings and figures; minimalism masquerading as ‘a theatre of the mind’; Kabuki wigs for the men; and so on….
On other DVDs the tiresome effects of this kind of staging are usually mitigated by a general reliance on close-ups. Here, because the best lit part of the stage is at the rear and because the singers frequently advance towards the front in order to project above the orchestra, there are huge stretches where everyone’s face is in shadow. The love duet, given in full, presents us with large black silhouettes against a dark blue background. One can only hope that the electricity savings were not swallowed up by the producer’s fee.
Five stars for the musicians (particularly the orchestra and Levine) and none for the picture.

| | Curious Case Of Benjamin Button DVDs (2008) 2-Disc Special Edition
Richard Wagner - Tristan Und Isolde review
$27.49 At once epic in scope and intimate in detail, David Fincher's THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is certainly the director's most emotional film to date (though FIGHT CLUB and SEVEN don't offer much in the way of competition). Loosely based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, this romantic drama tells the tale of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt), born in 1918 in New Orleans as a baby with wrinkles, cataracts, and arthritis. Benjamin will age backwards, getting younger as he watches those around him growing older. Included in that group are his adoptive mother, Queenie (Taraji P. Henson), and Daisy (Cate Blanchett), the love of his life whom he meets when she is just a little girl and he is an old man. They age in reverse, but despite Benjamin's globe-trotting adventures, their lives repeatedly intersect.
The script from Oscar winner Eric Roth bears more than a few hallmarks in common with his earlier work on FORREST GUMP: both adaptations cross decades and continents. But BENJAMIN's script or even the fine acting aren't its most impressive accomplishment; the technology--both CGI and makeup--used to make ...
