In this 90 minute DVD, originally aired on PBS, James Brown delivers, for the first time, the in-depth story of his life and music, from his early years of poverty and imprisonment to his extraordinary live shows. Brown became a musical icon whose extrovert showmanship eclipsed all rivals. Includes archival footage from the '50's to present day, along with 5 tracks performed live at the House of Blues in February of 2003, 3 rehearsal tracks and a hidden live performance with Pavarotti. Also includes lots of guest interviews. The legacy of James Brown's considerable talents spread far and wide throughout the music industry. Rap, soul, funk and R&B all owe a sizeable debt to the Godfather of Soul, and his legacy has seen him win an amazing amount of critical acclaim and prestigious awards. As is often the case with someone blessed with incredible talents there is a dark side to Brown's success, and his personal life has lead to incarceration and tabloid speculation. This in-depth documentary takes a look at the ups and downs of James Brown's career, offering some fascinating insights from the Godfather of Soul himself, as well as interview footage with Chuck D, Little Richard, Wyclef Jean, and many others. Exceptional JB documentary Includes three JB Divas: Whitney, Collins, Anderson, all in very fascinating and heart-clutching interview segments.
Some very rare performance clips, indeed, but they are heavily edited - what a shame to waste a chance to provide full songs from 1966 to 1971. Brown in rehearsal around 2000 is intriquing - he's still the showman even when he detects a flat note! terrible, terrible Submitted by Phil (Red Bank, N. J., U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

James Brown - Soul Survivor film
$12.89 Includes liner notes by John Ridley. Although a couple of the groups on this compilation of Philly soul from 1964-71 are well known (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Brenda & the Tabulations), the Fantastic Johnny C's "Boogaloo Down Broadway" and the Tabulations' "Right on the Tip of My Tongue" are the only cuts that will be readily recognizable to general fans. It's a grab bag of odds and ends, most fairly interesting. The Volcanos were one of the first groups that Gamble & Huff worked with, and several members would resurface in the Trammps. The two Harold Melvin cuts were done back in 1964, when John Atkins and not Teddy Pendergrass was the lead singer; "Get Out (and Let Me Cry)" is a nice, murky-fidelity Northern soul-type stomper. "The Touch of You," a substantial soul hit though not a pop one, was one of Brenda & the Tabulations' most exquisite ...

James Brown - Soul Survivor review
$13.55 One of the all-time great war films, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is yet another classic from the marvelous David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO). The film is an outstanding, psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1952 novel, a classic story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American ...

James Brown - Soul Survivor DVD
$10.49 Starring Lance Bass and Joey Fatone, members of the popular teenage boy band 'N Sync, ON THE LINE is a romantic comedy geared towards fans of these teen idols. Kevin (Bass) meets his true love-at-first-sight, Abbey (Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the Chicago "L" train, but he doesn't get her name and phone number. They're a perfect match--both can, and do, recite the names of all the U.S. Presidents, in order--and Kevin can't let this one go. He decides to wage a major campaign to find the girl again, which is the story of the rest of the film.
Kevin's best friend Rod (Fatone), an ad executive who also fronts a 1980s metal cover band, helps to plan and execute the search for Abbey. The boys put up posters all over Chicago. Their search bears unexpected fruits: as various women who are not Abbey respond to the posters, Rod and his friends reap the benefits. The media catches wind of the story, and the shy Kevin becomes a minor celebrity, a city-wide posterboy for romance. Does Kevin get the girl in the end? You know the answer. Cameos by Al Green and Jerry Stiller help elevate the film, which is a pleasant, likable vehicle for it's cool teen pop stars.
