In The Heat Of The Night album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are the set's ...

| | Jeff Lorber Water Sign CD (1979) Japan
In The Heat Of The Night songs
$33.75 Jazz trio the Jeff Lorber Fusion make good on the last word of their name by incorporating R&B, funk, and pop into their jazz sound. 1979's WATER SIGN is one of their best outings, and the remastered versions makes things even better.
By the mid-'80s, Jeff Lorber placed improvisation on the back-burner and took a highly commercial, radio-oriented approach that offered little evidence of his skills as a soloist. But early in his career, the electric keyboardist specialized in very accessible, yet free-spirited and creative, jazz/funk/R&B stressing improvisation and spontaneity. Water Sign, one of Lorber's strongest dates, unites his working group of 1979 (which includes Danny Wilson on electric bass and Dennis Bradford on drums) with high-quality soloists like Freddie Hubbard ...

| | Rozz Williams Dream Home Heartache CD (1995)
In The Heat Of The Night CD music
$11.79 All songs written or co-written by Rozz Williams or Gitane Demone except "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" (Brian Ferry) and "Manic Depression" (Jimi Hendrix).
A collaboration between Rozz Williams and former Christian Death bandmate Gitane Demone, Dream Home Heartache obviously takes its name from the Roxy Music chestnut "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," which is both the opening and closing track. In between, Williams and Demone also tackle Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression" (which unfortunately doesn't come off well at all), as well as five tracks of their own. The overall sound is on the pretty side of goth, with delicate piano, accordion, and tasteful synthesizers supporting Williams and Demone's cabaret-influenced vocals. Demone's two contributions, "These ...

| | Denny Laine Spreading My Wings CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
In The Heat Of The Night album
$15.85 As many fans who have more than a cursory knowledge of Denny Laine's non-Wings career could tell you from a glance at the track listings, this is not the ultimate Denny Laine collection. Most crucially, it doesn't contain anything from his late-1960s just-post-Moody Blues singles (or the radio sessions and unreleased material he did at that time), which -- particularly the singles "Say You Don't Mind" and "Catherine Wheel" -- were the best, most interesting solo releases he made. Even if you're discounting his slim non-Moody Blues 1960s output, this has nothing from his 1977 album Holly Days, or from his admittedly little-heeded 1990s releases. Instead this takes 20 songs from his 1980s releases, concentrating most heavily on his 1980 album Japanese Tears. What we're left with is middling, journeyman British mainstream rock, albeit by a pretty good singer with a high range, unfortunately one that deteriorated with time. Paul McCartney fans might be interested in "Japanese Tears" itself, one of the strongest tracks for what it's worth, and inspired by the canceled Japanese Wings tour (after McCartney was briefly jailed for carrying marijuana). Also, they might want to hear "Weep for Love," on which Paul and Linda McCartney played, and "Send Me the Heart," a Laine-McCartney composition, on which Paul McCartney appeared. The Japanese Tears cuts are moderately engaging in a way not too far removed from McCartney's straightforward pop/rock. But Laine loses the plot on subsequent efforts that make heavier use of synth rock (with some guest appearances by Rick Wakeman), hard rock, and soul ("Street" has guest vocals by journeywoman soul rocker Maggie Bell). It's an indictment of the disc that two of the best cuts, "Go Now" and "Say You Don't Mind," are remakes of songs that Laine sang better in the 1960s. Overall, it leaves the impression of a guy with some talent who's not coming close to drawing out his own potential, but then that was the ...
