Standard Screen; Soundtrack English A space crew travelling the cosmos runs into a long-missing craft, manned by Dr. Hans Reinhardt (Maximilian Schell). Upon meeting Reinhardt, the astronauts discover that not only is he insane, but also he is steadfast in his efforts to travel through a nearby "black hole," an abyss from which no one can escape. Matters worsen when Reinhardt holds the crew captive, after realizing that they can help him reach his goal. The squad must now figure out a way to flee from Reinhardt -- before it's too late...This attempt to gain a piece of the 'Star Wars' audience comprised Disney's first entry into the world of the PG rating. The film, not a huge success in 1979, has since gained a cult following due to its ominous tone and innovative visual design and effects. Color by Technicolor. Shot in Technovision.
Additional cast: Tommy McLoughlin (Capt. S.T.A.R).
Additional credits: Bob Barbash (story), Robert T. McCall (art director), Roger M. Shook (set decorator), Robert J. Schiffer (makeup supervisor).
The film was, at the time, The Walt Disney Company's most expensive.
The murderous robot, invented and manipulated by the character Hans Reinhardt, portrayed by Maximilian Schell, is actually named Maximilian. Black Hole Reviews: "...The special effects are fancy, and the design even more so....As comic books go, this one is pretty much a page-turner."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times

A Dark Sci-Fi Classic-----the finest you'll see. This film is easily in the top 5 of sci-fi movies. It has an all star cast from the 70s, great storyline, and it is the last movie to use pre Star Wars special effects; which isn't bad. The real attention grabber is the dark-macabre story that sets it apart from all other films of the genre. The ending really makes you think. The only negative is I think they could of done a better job transferring the movie to dvd. It looks like it did when I saw it at the theatre. AThrill Ride I have always loved this movie, it's special effects for that time period are awsome.I reccomend this movie to show a new generation of sci-fi lovers. Submitted by a reviewer (Garland,TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A true classic "The Black Hole", is probably one of the best gothic and darker sci-fi films of its day, and it pulls of the forbidding mood brilliantly. The film is incredibly atmospheric [and creepy?] and has many traits in common with "2001:A Space Odyssey", such as a weird ending which could be interpreted in many ways...This ambitious film was never given a real chance as it came out just after "Star Wars" and hence there are few who appreciate it's true merits. U simply just don't get films like this anymore, "The Black Hole" represents the end of an era in sci-fi films which a had real quality of depth to them. Black Hole DVD The Black Hole
The U.S.S. Cygnus is perched precariously at the edge of a black hole -- the vast, empty nothingness where space and time end. Anything that crosses its border enters a universe of the complete unknown. And so begins a story that only Disney?s film magicians could tell. A story of robots and humanoids. Of human genius and madness. And a spectacular descent into nature's ultimate mystery -- The Black Hole.
