Malian superstar Salif Keita has been recording inventive, fusion-based solo albums since the late 1980s. With his soaring, soulful tenor and synthesis of African, Latin, jazz, and Euro-pop music, Keita has crafted a significant niche for himself on the world music stage. Released in 2002, MOFFOU found the singer paring his sound down to rootsy African rhythms and melodies, eventually leading to 2004's REMIXES FROM MOFFOU, which features DJ treatments of tracks on the former album.
The opener, "Madan," is a tasteful touch-up in which a spare pulse underscores, but does not overpower, the band's web of percussion. A later remix of the same track, however, flirts with fragmented glitch-hop. "Moussolou (Yoruba Soul Mix)" adds an energetic techno backing to Keita's smoother, Latin-inflected mode. Throughout, cutting, looping, echo effects, and other DJ production tricks re-frame the music's usual grooves (especially the treatments applied to the sweet phrasing of Keita's backing singers). An intriguing take on Keita's celebrated music, REMIXES FROM MOFFOU gives fans a new angle on his songs, while providing club-culture mavens with a portal into the sounds of Mali.
Remix album featuring material that originally appeared (in it's original form) on the African artist's critically acclaimed 2002 album 'Moffou'. 11 tracks remixed by the likes of Luciano, Doctor L, Tim Paris, B Alone, LA Funk Mob, ARK, Charles Webster, Frederic Galliano, Osunlade, & more. | | Erykah Badu World Wide Underground CD (2003)
Remixes From Moffou CD music
$10.49 WORLD WIDE UNDERGROUND was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Back In The Day" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "Danger" was nominated for Best Urban/Alternative Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Despite being classified as an EP, the near 50-minute length of WORLD WIDE UNDERGROUND makes it closer to being Erykah Badu's fourth full-length outing. Inspired by the Frustrated Artist Tour that found this Texan crisscrossing the world in 2002, Badu uses a very groove-oriented and loosely defined approach towards these songs, thanks to the collaborative skills of her fellow members in the Freakquency team--James Poyser, Rashad "Ringo" Smith, and RC Williams.
The results range from the light and sensual flow of "Back in the Day," (featuring some crisp guitar licks by Lenny Kravitz) to "Bump It" with its mix of sprinkled in hip-hop beats, lightly layered synths, and a sweet mix of harmonies by Zap Mama and Karon Wheeler. Along the way, Badu must have been digging in the crates for ...

| | Supervielle CD (2004)
Remixes From Moffou album
$12.05 The Bajofondo Tango Club, whose mix of electro-acoustic nuevo tango is fascinating, seems to be trying to set itself up as a sort of young, hip version of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club with this solo release from youngest member Luciano Supervielle. It's an odd disc, with several wisps of tango in tracks like "Decollage" and "Perfume" or "Tanogodrome," but ambitions toward classical, hip-hop and also downbeat electronica. As such, it's not a disc that gets in your face, but floats gently and lovingly in the background, with enchanting melodies and arrangements -- a bit more than background, but not enough to claim attention for its entire span. Also included is a second disc of remixes, and as usual, they're a mixed bag. Androval's take on "Miles de Pasajeros" comes close to house and garage in its thumping bass, while Omar takes the same tunes and brings it into hip-hop noir. Calvi & Neill have three runs at "Perfume," ranging from a lovely version that emphasizes the tango of the piece with echoes of dub to more rhythmic, passionate moves. So what to make of all this? Superveille is a composer and arranger of definite talent, and the ...
