A natural-born honky tonk genius who's had the poor fortune of being born in the wrong decade, Dale Watson is the closest thing to Merle Haggard country music has produced since the late '70s, and his rough-hewn cry-in-your-beer style is as sincere as the day is long. For his seventh studio album, Watson has teamed up with another Texan with a fondness for country & western's noble past, Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, and though Dreamland sounds a bit more polished than Watson's best work, Benson certainly understands Watson's approach, and they make a pretty good team for these sessions. If there's a flaw in Dreamland, it's not so much Benson's work as that of engineer Chris Burns, who gives the proceedings a slick, digital sheen that doesn't quite mesh with the material. Also, Watson has moved the emphasis from his harder-edged material to songs with a less flinty approach. But Watson himself has rarely sung with greater strength and confidence, he's written some terrific songs (favorites include "Pretty Girls," "Honky Tonkers Don't Cry," and "I Wish You'd Come Around"), and Benson has rounded up a great set of pickers to back him up, including Redd Volkaert, Ralph Mooney, and Cindy Cashdollar. If the result isn't hardcore honky tonk, it's still honky tonk through and through, and it's an album that'll sound great in a beer hall as you knock back cold ones on a Friday night. I'd advise Benson to hire Ray Kennedy to man the boards for their next session with Dale Watson, but otherwise Dreamland is a step in the right direction. ~ Mark Deming

Hes done it yet again. Dale Watson has been able to release great album after great album for over a decade now. His latest is no exception. 12 tracks of pure country, that will have you drinkin, dancin and crying. Highlights to me are the soon to be Honky Tonk classic, Honky Tonkers Dont Cry and the emotional I Wish You'd Come Around. I highly suggest picking this up. | | Wayne Hancock Swing Time CD (2003)
Dreamland CD music
$12.19 Contains an untitled hidden track following "Flatland Boogie".
Recorded live at The Continental Club, Austin, Texas on March 6 & 7, 2003.
As anyone who has heard him knows, Wayne Hancock is a honky tonk man, and what a honky tonk man does best is make with some tunes suitable for both dancing and beer drinking at an unpretentious nightspot along the highway. So the idea of a Wayne Hancock live album would seem like a no-brainer, and this set, recorded during a two-night stand at Austin's Continental Club in the spring of 2003, effortlessly captures his firecracker enthusiasm and the sharp picking of his band in full flight in front of an audibly enthusiastic crowd. Of course, all of Hancock's previous records have been produced by Lloyd Maines, who hasn't exactly cluttered up Hancock's sound with a lot of messy overdubs, so the performances on Swing Time don't differ dramatically from the studio versions ...
| | Flatlanders Wheels Of Fortune CD (2004)
Dreamland music CDs
$9.79 WHEELS OF FORTUNE is the Flatlanders' second reunion album, following 2002's NOW AGAIN, and it's the sound of a band finally falling into their groove, more than 30 years after their initial split. NOW AGAIN had arguably been dominated by Jimmie Dale Gilmore's lyrics and vocals, but on WHEELS OF FORTUNE, Gilmore's cohorts Butch Hancock and Joe Ely are more assertive with their own material, offering tracks like the wry country stomp of "I'm Gonna Strangle You Shorty" and the country-rock strut of ...

Dreamland album
$11.49 With his beetle brows, his occasional penchant for lyrics dealing with damnation and salvation, and his startlingly deep and resonant voice, you might be forgiven for mistaking Dale Watson for a honky tonk version of Nick Cave. Then again, the whole idea of a honky tonk version of Nick Cave is weird enough that maybe you wouldn't be forgiven after all. And besides, ...

| | George Canyon One Good Friend CD (2004)
Dreamland album
$6.69 One Good Friend is the American major-label debut for George Canyon, a Canadian country singer whose 1999 eponymous debut made a few waves in his homeland. It still took him a long time to cross over into the American market -- a long five years separates that record and the stateside appearance of One Good Friend in the fall of 2004. During that time, he went through the Nashville production line, shedding some of the Canadian quirks and winding up as a likable, straight-ahead neo-traditionalist country singer. Canyon has a nice tenor voice, one that he can twist into a good approximation of George Jones when he wants to (as he does on the novelty highlight "Workin' on Ten"), but this record is too smooth and friendly to be hardcore honky tonk. That's just used as a bit of flavor on a record that's cheerfully middle-of-the-road ...
