My Darkness album
$9.49 Before the Dawn are led by the guitar and vocals of Tuomas Saukkonen, who can spot a thick meaty metal riff and blood-curdling wail at any moment. "Disappear" is a great example of this, as Before the Dawn sound like some sonic stew made up of Alexisonfire, Rammstein, and Iron Maiden. Assisted by fellow guitarist Juho Räihä, the band isn't that hard on the ears, but is rather in some sort of melodic metal framework. A tad tighter is the brawny "Repentance," which grows in intensity and sounds like early Metallica, despite the brief atmospheric lull in the middle. Relentless, rampant, and at times rabid, Before the Dawn are at their best during the powerful, brooding "Fade Away," which again buries the vocals underneath the guitar and rhythm section. The galloping "Angels Tombston" is another plodding piece of work, with Aatu Mukka playing a large role behind the drum kit as the song moves through a series of twists and turns. It also seems to get a bit artsy during an interlude without guitar, before getting its second wind. Unfortunately, when they head into what sound like tired hard rock arrangements, as they do with "Black Dawn," ...
| | Haunted Revolver CD (2004)
My Darkness CD music
$14.05 The Haunted's fourth studio album was their first for renowned metal label Century Media, and one has to wonder if the Swedish neo-thrash favorites felt they had something to prove to their new record company. Picking up the slack from 2003's typically energetic but somewhat tired-sounding One Kill Wonder opus (recorded soon after one of the Björler brothers threatened to derail the band's progress by going temporarily AWOL), rEVOLVEr brings back that elusive element called "songwriting" (remember that?), so crucial to keeping speed-laden records from concluding on a disappointing "what just happened?" note. No such fears here, since the "EVOLVE" purposefully ...

| | Tim Wilson Certified Aluminum: His Greatest Recycled Hits, Vol. 1 CD (2002)
My Darkness CD music
$5.19 Tim Wilson only moved from Southern Tracks Records to Capitol Records in 1999, but he had made four albums for the label -- It's a Sorry World, Gettin' My Mind Right, Hillbilly Homeboy, and I Should've Married My Father-In-Law (to go with five earlier ones for Southern Tracks) -- by 2001. Still, issuing a compilation based mostly on those records seems premature. It consists of ten humorous songs sung by the comedian (one of which, "Dale Darrell Waltrip Richard Petty Rusty Awesome Bill Irvin Gordon Earnhardt Smith...Johnson Jr.," was licensed from Southern Tracks), plus 12 standup bits based on his Uncle BS character. Wilson sings and speaks in a deep voice with a heavy southern accent, and he indulges in rural humor that refers constantly to redneck stereotypes. His jokes tend to be one-dimensional; for example, the song "Acid Country" simply juxtaposes references to country music and acid rock without explaining ...
| | Enuff Z'Nuff Welcome To Blue Island CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan; Germany
My Darkness music CDs
$42.05 The anticipated release of the American metal group's 2002 release; includes "Z Overture" and "Saturday." 2002, Japanese import.
With quite a few of the '80s-era glam-metal acts trying to come back with completely different approaches and styles come the 21st century, Chicago power pop vets Enuff Z'nuff continue to specialize in what they do best. And as evidenced by such latter-day releases as 2002's Welcome to Blue Island, they can still whip up a Beatlesque melody with no problem. The group continues to be led by the underrated songwriting duo of Donnie Vie and Chip Znuff, whose pop sensibilities are still keen on such standout tracks as "Good Times (Are Hard to Find)" and the upbeat ditty "Zentemental Journey" (which is preceded by a sitar-heavy Middle Eastern piece, "Z Overture," which is equal parts "Kashmir" and "Within You Without You"). For the hardcore fan, try to find the import version of Welcome to Blue Island, which includes four bonus tracks -- one being a surprise cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies" (after all, this was the same band that was almost single-handedly responsible for preventing the glam-metal scene from infesting any further). ~ Greg Prato

| | Duke Pearson Sweet Honey Bee CD (1966) Bonus Track; Remastered
My Darkness songs
$8.45 Pianist/composer Duke Pearson leads an all-star group on this run-through of seven of his compositions. The musicians (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, Joe Henderson on tenor, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Mickey Roker, and the pianist/leader) are actually more impressive than many of the compositions, although the swinging minor-toned "Big Bertha" deserved to become a standard. The frameworks are quite intelligent (and everyone doesn't solo on each selection), and the improvisations ...
| | wm Alan Ross Scorpius Risin' CD (1997)
My Darkness album
$18.99 BEWARE. Listening to this music can become habit-forming. 1 CD = $15.00 2+ CDs = $12.00 each With Scorpius Risin', wm Alan Ross has once again given us a collective mix of the eclectic - a unique blend of strong color, contrast and balance. The heavy electric guitar work of Scott Jarrett (brother to Keith Jarrett, jazz virtuoso) on the title track strongly contrasts with the delicate mandolin work of Bryan Cumming on Dance With My Wife. The instrumentation is a masterpiece, and includes the work of Jarrett on autoharp, piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and vocals; ...
