A sampler of contemporary reggae artists, from roots to dancehall, this second volume in the Reggae Now series has a fresh, bright feel to it.. There's a lot of variety here, and some of the obvious highlights include Sizzla's "Vision," the epic and narrative "Based on a True Story" by Turbulence, and the Bob Marley-influenced "No More Murder" by Morgan Heritage. Luciano's soulful singing makes "Thanking You God" another standout. In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around. Three years in the making--twelve months in prison for a DUI being part of the problem--STREET HOP often has a solid foundation that's absolutely classic in feel but also features those quirky, sick-o rhymes that are distinctly post-Shady. "I mix a between Chris Brown and Chris Jericho/Where's your daughter?" is an unsettling bit from the freaky track "Street Hop 2010" which goes on to reference Marlon Brando's Apache friend picking up his Oscar right before rattling off some psycho-babble about "syphilis nun chucks" and other bizarre whatnot. Julie Ruin is an alter ego of Riot Grrrl scene matriarch Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame. Originally released in 1997, it's a solo album recorded in Hanna's apartment, primarily out of samples and loops over which Hanna sings-chants-raps-declaims manifestos related to semiotics, social engineering, and crocheting. Its 15 tracks are as witty, pointed, and angry as anything in the Bikini Kill catalogue, although its skeletal, homemade bedroom-electronica style presages Le Tigre's more overtly danceable take on the same subjects.
