With ESCONDIDA, singer/songwriter Jolie Holland has crafted a truly remarkable record. Spectral, rootsy, and evocative, these 12 tunes--which touch on blues, country, folk, and swing--reflect the precision of a new traditionalist, but bear a creative twist that keeps the whole from sounding like mere revival. Holland doesn't fit comfortably into any categories; her fusion of styles is made unique by her spare arrangements, creative instrumentation (the record features ukulele, marimba, musical saw, and soprano saxophone), and--most notably--her distinctive voice and loose, conversational phrasing.
The opener, "Sascha," a narrative about a chance romance sung with superb melodic flair over an easy swing progression, typifies Holland's musical aesthetic. The gorgeous "Black Stars," one of the finest tracks on ESCONDIDA, takes on a spooky, dreamy atmosphere with its mesmerizing vocal line. Holland shifts gears in the countrified gospel of "Goodbye California," the desperate ballad "Do You?," and the surreal "Darlin Ukelele." As a lyricist, Holland also impresses, weaving striking images and blues narratives together with apparent ease. On this album, Holland presents a collection of beautiful, soulful, Americana-tinged songs that are singular, strangely familiar, and undeniably good.
Recorded at In The Pocket, Forestville, California.
Personnel: Jolie Holland (vocals, guitar, ukelele, piano); Brian Miller (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Keith Cory (banjo, mandolin, bass); Paul Scriver (soprano saxophone); Ara Cory (trumpet); Dave Mihaly (marimba, drums, background vocals); Enzo Garcia (saw).
Uncut (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]here's a quirky, haunted quality to the songs....[T]he effect is of floating dazedly above worldly matters, like a figure in a Chagall painting." Magnet (p.67) - Ranked #18 in Magnet's "The 20 Best Albums Of 2004" - "ESCONDIDA delivers the goods with the wilted-orchid whisper of Billie Holiday." CMJ (p.6) - "ESCONDIDA is a reminder that Americana isn't about patriotism, it's about the twisted roots of blues, jazz and country growing into something strange and beautiful." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "It really is incredibly good....A contemporary of Billie Holiday this time around rather than a disciple of Will Oldham." Escondida album
$11.49 Additional personnel includes: Jolie Holland (guitar, fiddle, background vocals).
Since the advent of CDs, reviewers ceased using phrases like, "From the moment the needle hit the vinyl, it was clear that Blue Horse had a beautiful, layered sound." Whatever the medium, the Be Good Tanyas have a knack for recharging traditional pieces with a sonic twist. Who would even think to take on a warhorse like "The Coo Coo Bird" or add electric guitar and drums to "Rain and Snow?" Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton, and Trish Klein sing, play multiple instruments (acoustic and electric), and, now and then, write their own material. They fill out their sound ...
| | Jolie Holland Catalpa CD (2003)
Escondida CD music
$9.99 Most know Jolie Holland as a member of Vancouver's the Be Good Tanyas. Catalpa is her first album, but it wasn't recorded as such. It had been a demo recording passed around to fans until Neume reviewed it on the internet. The venerable upstart label Anti has given it the proper release it deserves. Holland is a native Texan, and it shows in her songwriting. Her images are rich, though stark and Gothic; they sound transposed. While her worldview is mostly modern, its articulation is rooted in a mythical, metonymic America that ceased to exist long before Greil Marcus ever thought about writing Invisible Republic. Catalpa is a place of scribbles and ciphers. Holland's songs are etched out of encounters and experiences ...
| | Jesse Sykes Oh, My Girl CD (2004)
Escondida music CDs
$11.95 Oh, My Girl, the second album by singer/songwriter Jesse Sykes and her band the Sweet Hereafter -- led by Phil Wandscher -- picks up where her debut, Reckless Burning, left off. Songs are played at cough-syrup tempo, production is sparse, instrumentation equally so, offering just enough of a frame for the melody and lyrics to hang themselves on, and everything, absolutely everything, is underplayed. ...

When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock ...

| | Mary Foster Conklin Crazy Eyes CD (1998)
Escondida music CDs
$15.19 The New York jazz press of the 1990s sometimes described Mary Foster Conklin as a "cabaret singer," but Crazy Eyes points to the fact that she's really more of a jazz-pop singer with occasional cabaret touches. The sort of campiness that has characterized a lot of cabaret recordings won't be found on this likable CD. Conklin is playful and entertaining on material ranging from "The Gentleman Is a Dope" to Duke Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" and Willie Dixon's "Dead Presidents," but she's not one to inundate us with the campy or the corny. Dexter Gordon's "Fried Bananas" (for which she embraces seldom heard lyrics by Anne Phillips) is outright bebop, and there's no denying that the piano trio backing Conklin (pianist Bill Mays, bassist Jon Burr and drummer Terry Clarke) is very much a jazz trio. One of the most interesting selections on Crazy Eyes is "How Can I Be Sure" -- originally a pop-rock hit for the Rascals in 1967, the tune gets an unlikely post-bop makeover. Generally decent and offering some pleasant surprises, Crazy Eyes indicated that Conklin was someone jazz fans should keep an eye on. ~ Alex Henderson
SPRING 2006 UPDATE: Mary has finished her third recording, a tribute to the pianist/singer/songwriter Matt Dennis. The working title: "Blues For Breakfast". Release should be in October 2006. Details to follow...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HER OTHER CD "You'd Be Paradise" Praised by the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS as "a delicious jazz-blues singer with a smoky, sensuous sound" (Wayman Wong)"Her style is precisely balanced between jazz and cabaret. Scratch her witty tough-girl-from-Jersey patter and you'll find a sensitive artist (but not frail!) with a wide-ranging, boldly colored voice and an open ear for offbeat material." - (Terry Teachout, The Washington Post)"Conklin delves into a wide range of music. Her takes on blues singer Ann Rabson's 'You'll Never ...
