Bad Religion: Greg Graffin (vocals); Mr. Brett (guitar, background vocals); Greg Hetson (guitar); Jay Bentley (bass, background vocals); Pete Finestone (drums). Recorded at Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, California in June 1989. Composers: Greg Graffin; Brett Gurewitz. Personnel: Greg Graffin (vocals, sound effects); Brett Gurewitz (guitar, sound effects); Greg Hetson, Mister Brett (guitar); Jay Bentley (bass guitar, sound effects); Pete Finestone (drums); Pierre Deauville (computer, sound effects). Recording information: Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, CA (06/1989). Arranger: Bad Religion. Suffer had already wound the meter on Bad Religion's Cali hardcore even tighter -- No Control simply and forcefully continued the shift, delivering a pummel of melodic songwriting made sharp by Greg Graffin's populist cynicism and the stinging barbs of a twin-guitar strike. The remastering for the 2004 version greatly amplified the album's volume. It might also strip away some reverb from the instrumentation, but the latter observation is mostly theoretical, as the later No Control really just sounds louder. This is welcome, as it makes the band sound that much more direct on principal cuts like "I Want to Conquer the World," "Automatic Man," the aggressive title track, and "Progress." ~ Johnny Loftus Without a doubt, 1989's NO CONTROL is one of Bad Religion's best releases. This was one of the albums that helped bridge the band's more reckless earlier direction with their more focused (but just as pissed-off) '90s-era. If you're just discovering the band, NO CONTROL is a wise first purchase, on the strength of such cuts as "Big Bang," "Automatic Man," the title track, and "I Want to Conquer the World." NO CONTROL is one of punk's greatest all-time albums and a quintessential purchase for fans of the genre.Option - "...hot, tight, and very fast arrangements..." Reflex - "...perhaps the catchiest, purest and best punk..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "The melodic pummeling of their best music is once again present in abundance." Bad Religion No Control Songs No Control Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Best Bad Religion Album!! It's got a fast pace, nice solos, good riffs and great vocals too!!. total punk rock fury! possibly one o0f the best punk albums of all time. As usual, bad religion manage to deliver amzazing heart-felt lyrics, and string them up, along with fast, and fiery chords.
Graffin's deep, unforgettable voice is one that puts all other vocalists to shame.
a personal favorite of mine is 'sometimes i feel like'-a totaly different and catchy song, with intensity and fury crammed into every punk rock second. The lyrics make it different from every other punk song in the world. clearly, they are not afraid to be unique with them.
'big bang' is another MUST HAVE! it is rather political and is enough to send shivers down your spine along with the message tapped into your skull with this sing is about Submitted by emily (wales, swansea) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Edie Brickell Shooting Rubber Bands At The Stars CD (1989)
No Control
$6.59 Edie Brickell & New Bohemians: Edie Brickell (vocals); Kenny Withrow, Robbie Blunt (guitar); Wix (keyboards); Chris Whitton, Brandon Aly (drums), John Bush (percussion); John Henry (background vocals). The track "I Do" is not listed in the booklet or packaging of SHOOTING RUBBER BANDS AT THE STARS. As debut albums by young bands go, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars is nearly flawless. With a slight southern twinge in her voice, the 23-year-old Brickell churned out brilliant lyrics and captivating vocal performances, backed by the solid and innovative players that comprised the original New Bos -- Kenny Withrow, Brad Houser, John Bush, and Brandon Aly. Twisting words like putty, Brickell wraps herself up in phrases and melodic lines with layers of meaning not easily grasped at first listen. Her simple observations offer deep contemplations for the willing disciples of her musical philosophies. The catchy breakthrough hit "What I Am" is the perfect example: "I'm not aware of too many things/I know what I know, if you know what I mean." Zen and the art of songwriting. On other fronts, Brickell's fascination with actress Edie Sedgwick turned itself into "Little Miss S.," while strained friendships inspired "Circle." Every song on this record hits its mark and is worthy of special attention. How well does "Nothing" capture the frustration of a non-communicative partner? Very well, indeed. Then there's "The Wheel," "She," and "Air of December." Highlights, one and all. Rather than an overblown big rock finish, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars closes with a solo acoustic performance of "I Do," a quiet plea for a partner who's equal and true, complete and ...
| | Traffic Far From Home CD (1994)
No Control
$12.35 Personnel: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, keyboards, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Mike Dolan (guitar, programming); Davy Spillane (Uillean pipes); Jim Capaldi (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Woodstock, Kilcoole, Ireland. It could be argued that, in its most basic form, Traffic was a vehicle for the songs of Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi, who wrote most of the material and on some tracks were the only musicians performing. But the question of whether Winwood and Capaldi could validly constitute Traffic by themselves was not addressed until 1994, 20 years after the group disbanded, when the two surprisingly announced they would be recording and touring under their old band name. The album they made together sounded for the most part like a Winwood solo album. He played most of the instruments and sang (Capaldi drummed and sang occasional backup vocals), and he didn't show much interest in the lengthy instrumental passages that characterized Traffic in its heyday. Winwood, the composer, had simply moved on from that old style, and since the new Traffic wasn't a band in any real sense, its sound reflected his contemporary concerns. But if you listened to the lyrics, written by Capaldi, you did hear traces of the old Traffic. Granted, lyrics were not among Traffic's strong suits, but Capaldi, in his sometimes roundabout way, did have certain continuing concerns -- a generalized sense of spirituality, a tendency to give advice, and a rejection of the negative aspects of modern society. Winwood may have wished to return to music of greater substance, and if so, he got what he wanted; Far from Home certainly explored weightier topics than a Steve Winwood album. But Capaldi hadn't really improved as a writer over the years, and the final product still worked better musically than lyrically, and, to most ears, didn't really sound like a Traffic album. The resulting confusion kept the album from having much commercial impact. ~ William Ruhlmann The fervent, aching timbre of Steve Winwood's voice is one of the enduring sound signatures in contemporary pop. In reviving his career with such hit albums as ARC OF A DIVER, a new Steve Winwood emerged from the ashes of the old--a smooth R&B crooner and song stylist. And as good as all the subsequent ...

No Control
$6.05 Hall & Oates: Darryl Hall (vocals, guitar, keyboards, vibraphone); John Oates (vocals, guitar, synthesizers, programming). Additional personnel includes: Tom "T-Bone" Wolk (various instruments); Pat Buchanan (guitar); Mark Rivera, Lenny Pickett, Danny Wolensky (saxophone); Phillippe Saisse (keyboards); Tony Beard (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Joanna Allen (background vocals). From 1980-1984, the Billboard chart could have been dubbed the Hall & Oates chart for their seemingly never ending assault of number one singles (amazingly, they never had a number one album). However, after Big Bam Boom and their live pre-sabbatical At the Apollo, Hall again embarked on his solo album for six/seven years and the overblown Three Hearts and its happy ending machine were born. When they returned on Arista in 1988, they delivered ...
