While Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke left Free for Swan Song/Atlantic's Bad Company, their ex-bandmate, the late Paul Kossoff, put together another group on Atlantic which sounded like...you guessed it...Bad Company. Terry Wilson-Slesser could easily be mistaken for Rodgers on so much of this album, be it the song "Jason Blue" or "It's a Long Way to the Top." This material is terrific sleeper stuff for the '70s hard rock genre, before Foreigner made that whole world much slicker. Where Lou Gramm could sometimes annoy, Back Street Crawler creates real hard rock art, taking this oh so seriously. The song "Jason Blue" is a powerful potion, one that would fit perfectly on a classic hits station, arguably one of the best tracks here. It is one of six compositions by Mike Montgomery, the major force on this album. Montgomery co-writes two additional tunes and sings lead on "All the Girls Are Crazy" and "Survivor," dueting with Terry Wilson-Slesser on "New York, New York" (a Mike Montgomery original, not the tune made famous by Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra). And by the way, how many groups would have two guys named Terry Wilson in their band at the same time anyway? The more you play The Band Plays On, the more it grows on you. It is one of those albums that has enormous depth that can't be heard on the first spin or two. Sounding so much like Bad Company on the same label was no doubt a drawback -- the records showing up in the same section alphabetically at retail bins, their names so closely aligned, the unfortunate big difference for Back Street Crawler was no hit single emerging from this set. Mike Montgomery's vocal style on the excellent song "Survivor" isn't as gritty as Terry Slesser, nor as commercial. Slesser would leave after this project to be replaced by John "Rabbit" Bundrick on vocal, who similarly joined Free when they needed his talents to replace members moving on. "It's a Long Way Down to the Top" could be Bad Company performing "Ready for Love," down to the riff and the mood, but so many references to that band don't take away from the fact that this is a solid '70s blues-rock disc with hooks, top-notch production, and lots to offer. Wouldn't be surprised if somewhere down the road people started picking up on The Band Plays On, songs like "New York, New York," "It's a Long Way Down to the Top," and "Jason Blue" are ripe for being covered. ~ Joe Viglione

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music ...

Band Plays On
$14.79 Wow, you gotta see this lady perform! Whether you are catching her with her southern twang belting out a Patsy Cline ballad or standing in the sanctuary of a church in your home town sharing her love for God through her own original songs-you know she is telling you a story of life. She sings of cheatin’ lovers or new found love and you realize she is lost in a story of life that she has experienced as her eyes tear up or a very private smile slides fleetingly across her lips. You have to be able to watch her expressions as the song develops from the first note to the very last emotional tag line. You will swear she is living through the story right there in front of you.She stands in front of a congregation at your hometown church, practically whispering the first few measures of Amazing grace, and her energy increases with each word until she is so full of her love for God and the miracles He has allowed in her life, you just want to beg to experience The Lords love with the same depth of emotion she is feeling it. Then suddenly she is belting out some of her own original songs like “Water to Wine” and telling you the story of Jesus walking here on this earth making water turn to wine (without the help of the grapes on the vine) and feeding thousands with just two little fish and a lot of love. You feel that you are standing in that crowd of hungry people, filling up on the fish from the disciples hands! When her husband Gary steps up on the stage to join her in a country western love song, you have no doubt that they share the same special love that they are singing about. When they sing and gaze into each others eyes, it is apparent this is not acting, the feelings they share are real. The first CD Betty is offering here on CDBABY is a collection of her original songs. Four are brand new Gospel songs and the other six are country western songs she wrote a number of years ago. Her first song to be recorded was “You Came right back”, a country song about lyin’, cheatin’ and all those actions ...
