Superb Birth music CDs
$14.49 Released in Europe by Musea in 2000 and reissued worldwide by InsideOut four years later, this is Ritual's debut album -- and the word "debut" has rarely sounded so meaningless. This is already a full-fledged, mature, and technically impressive band, playing and singing with a lot of passion. The Scandinavian folk/medieval current that would all but disappear by the third album underpins every single song here, the violin of guest Lotta Hasselquist adding an even stronger folk flavor to four key tracks. If the music already presents the hard-rocking progressive rock tendency that will award the group a contract with InsideOut, it is nevertheless much lighter and funnier. Tracks like "Wingspread," "Solitary Man," and "Big Black Secret" are heavy-pounding numbers, ...

| | Spock's Beard Octane CDs (2005) Bonus CD; Special Edition
Superb Birth CD music
$17.49 Spock's Beard return to the music stores with their first record since Light in June 2004. The first seven tracks of this album comprise a conceptual suite entitled "A Flash Before My Eyes," based on a story by John Boegehold. It's about the experiences of a man in the process of experiencing a car wreck as it happens and watching his life flash before him as it passes out of him. He recalls everything from his parents' separation on Christmas, to high school football games and meeting his wife and creating a life with her. It all ends at the end of the flash. The overture, "Prelude to the ...
| | Lady Day: The Best Of Billie Holiday CDs (2001)
Superb Birth music CDs
$15.95 Recorded between 1935 and 1942. Includes liner notes by Gary Giddins.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder & Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
One of the top three female jazz singers in history, Billie Holiday (along with Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan) changed not only the course of jazz but the very shape of pop culture. On this 2001 Columbia two-CD collection, we hear Holiday in her early years. These indelible recordings, backed by legends in their own right, Teddy Wilson (piano), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Benny Goodman (clarinet) and others, highlight the passionate singing of the great Lady Day.
Holiday was known for her elegant phrasing, warm (often heart-rending) tone, and her coarse, witty parlance. This combination of musical and personal attributes was her charm and, indeed, few of her contemporaries could compete with such magnetism. In the entire history of jazz, arguably no one sang such standards as "You Go to My ...

| | Cannibal Corpse Butchered At Birth CD (1991)
Superb Birth album
$17.45 In the early '90s, Cannibal Corpse acquired a small cult in the death metal underground by embracing some of the most gruesome lyrics the subgenre had to offer. Thriving on shock value, the band inspires comparisons to GWAR and comes across as a parody of death metal and grindcore more than anything. Like its previous album, the equally twisted Eaten Back to Life, Butchered at Birth addresses such lurid topics as dismemberment, torture, and masochism. One will need the lyric sheet to know just how gross songs like "Under the Rotted Flesh," "Meat Hook Sodomy," "Covered with Sores," and "Rancid Amputation" are -- the grunting vocals are impossible to understand. Some retailers refused to carry this CD because of its depiction of a woman being mutilated by zombies, and Cannibal Corpse wasted no time getting as much publicity as possible from the controversy. The rockers are one-dimensional, but then, they never claimed to be anything else. This band's obvious goal was to deliver the musical equivalent of B-movie horror ...
