Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English This film adaptation of Harvey Fierstein's Tony award-winning 1982 play follows ten years (1971-81) in the life of middle-aged homosexual Arnold Beckoff. The film opens as Arnold encounters Ed in a gay bar. Although Ed bluntly and immediately announces his bisexuality, Arnold can't help but feel betrayed when he later catches Ed with a woman.
Arnold then falls hopelessly in love with a young, handsome ex-hustler named Alan. The two start a relationship strong enough to survive Alan's infidelity. But tragedy intervenes, destroying the couple's hope for happiness and leaving Arnold in despair.
In the film's final segment, Arnold has become an adoptive father, a role that requires many adjustments in his life. In addition, he wants desperately to repair his relationship with his overbearing mother -- a task easier said than done. The funny and poignant story of an aging drag queen's hilarious attempts to find domestic bliss with everyone from a school teacher to a tolerant young male model. The greatest challenge for Arnold in this adaptation of Harvey Fierstein's Broadway play is his complicated relationship with his mother. Color by Metrocolor.

Great film, fun to watch over and over again. You'll never tire of this film, with some very powerful messages to deliver, and a wonderful cast of characters to watch...the film will leave you feeling good all over.

 a classic of gay cinema
Torch song is a movie that everyone should watch; gay, str8 or indifferent. It blends humour and tragedy with the hunt for that most elusive thing; some1 who will always be there for u no matter what. set in the era b4 AIDS this film shows the prejudice faced by gay men then and now and 1 mans fight, not for acceptance but respect for who he is from those closest 2 him. and the refusal 2 accept anything less.

The long wait is worth it!
I have been looking forward for this film to be released on DVD and it is well worth the wait! Harvey Fierstein is an intelligent writer and a very talented actor. The support cast is very strong and they all compliment each other. Though it is about every aspect of a homosexual/bisexual relationship, it is not preachy nor dogmatic. It is a very touching story about love. No matter what your gender identity is, this is definitely worth getting for the love story!!

For those who want a touching portrayal of love, life and turmoil in the LBGT community, this will certainly meet the billet. No part of life is protrayed to "campy" just outright "close to home" which most of the LGBT community will relate to.

Based on Harvey Fierstein's play, "Torch Song Trilogy" is a comic/dramatic look at the life of Arnold Beckoff (Fierstein), a drag queen searching for love. His on-again-off-again friendship with Ed, a bisexual teacher, his romance with a handsome young model (Matthew Broderick), and his tempestuous relationship with his mother (Anne Bancroft) are told with brilliant humor and gut-wrenching drama. A mixture of fantasy and bitter reality set in the years before AIDS.
