| | Music Of Indonesia 5: Betawi & Sudanese Music Of The North Coast Of Java - Topeng Betawi, Tanjidor, Ajeng CD (1994)
Late Last Night
$13.85 Recorded in Java in 1990 and 1992. Java's north coast is a cultural jumble even by Indonesian standards. In the 20th century waves of Europeans, Javanese and Sundanese overtook a highly multi-ethnic group that had earlier merged into so-called Batavians. Three pieces from a village theater form called Topeng Betawi begin this volume. The ensemble features many of the same gongs and tuned bronze xylophones used in Javanese gamelan, as well as the rebab (local violin) and female singer that cover many of the melodies in both styles. Topeng Betawi music ranges between quietly menacing passages and frenzied, metallic clangor. Four remarkable Tanjidor pieces use the instruments of Dutch military bands, horns, fiddles, clarinet, and their Javanese variants. This is Betawi music style ...
| | Toni Jannotta Just Jazz CD (1999)
Late Last Night
$14.05 Personnel: Toni Jonnotta (vocals); Ken Rosser (guitar); Robert Kyle (flute, saxophone, tenor saxophone); David Crozier (flute, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Ernie Watts, Gene Burkert (tenor saxophone); David Scott (piano); Ron Monaog, Jerry Steinhilber, Kendall Kay (drums); Mike Faue (percussion). Audio Mixer: Neal Avron. Liner Note Author: Zan Stewart. Recording information: Sunset Sound Studio, Hollywood, CA (09/30/1997/10/01/1997). Photographer: Warren Berman. Citing Annie Ross as her idol and Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau, and Bobby McFerrin as major influences, Toni Jannotta devotes a good part of her first album to the vocalese style as well as showcasing her lyric writing skills. Vocalese preferences like Horace Silver's "Doodlin'" and Hampton Hawe's "Jackie," with Annie Ross' lyrics, all are offered with the stream-of-consciousness vocalizing that characterizes vocalese. There's a rare vocal version of Thelonious Monk's ...

| | Kids Nursery Rhymes, Vol. 1 CD (2002)
Late Last Night
$6.09 Kids Nursery Rhymes, Vol. 1 is an intriguing collection of children's music standards and strange gems from a scarier past. It begins with an odd little song called "Aerophane Jelly" that may or may not be about the tasty French treat. With its female-chorus vocals and loping, slightly unsettling rhythm, the song suggests the campy, naïve genius of the Shaggs, or those deceptively twee ditties that always accompany the crazed maniacs' childhood flashbacks in 1980s slasher flicks. In fact, many of the tunes on Kids Nursery Rhymes, Vol. 1 have more in common with the bizarre antics of Deerhoof or Petra Haden's 1999 masterpiece, Imaginaryland -- artists and albums that reprocess the candyfloss and whimsy of children's albums into twisted adult lullabies. "Cockles and Mussels" opts for a harpsichord and a faux-cockney accent to portray the story of Molly Malone and her wheelbarrow, while the Oliver! outtake "Food Glorious Food" features the ...
