Composer songbook albums performed by jazz instrumentalists are nothing new, but pianist Bill Charlap's takes on the exuberant and tender tunes of Leonard Bernstein make for an inspired addition to this tradition. From the opening trill on drummer Kenny Washington's hi-hat, "Cool" (from WEST SIDE STORY) kicks off the proceedings, crackling with excitement. The entire track is superb, and makes one wonder why this song has not become a standard.
The performers stretch out, listening intently to one another and coming up with a fine mini-opus on "Glitter and Be Gay" (from CANDIDE), a tune that sports the more European side of Bernstein's style. As groups are wont to do after having logged many musical miles together, Charlap's trio exudes an overall rhythmic adventurousness throughout the set. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than the playfully off-kilter "America," popularized by Rita Moreno in WEST SIDE STORY, which includes tasty Ahmad Jamal-esque chording by Charlap. "Lonely Town," "Lucky to Be Me," and, especially, "Some Other Time" remind listeners that Charlap and company approach ballads with a rarefied delicacy; these tunes truly sing. With smart arrangements, witty musical asides, and a broad dynamic and expressive range, the Bill Charlap Trio creates classic jazz for the 21st century.

Somewhere: The Songs Of Leonard Bernstein album
$13.49 The chemistry between Brian Lynch and Bill Charlap should come as no surprise to anyone who has heard their work together as members of the Phil Woods Quintet. This 2003 session features the trumpeter and the pianist with bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The opener is a very refreshing arrangement of the frequently recorded standard "On Green Dolphin Street"; the 7/4 time signature and Charlap's unusual vamp help it to stand out, with Lynch's muted trumpet leading the way. The leader switches to flügelhorn for a lush treatment of "Autumn Nocturne." The disguised introduction and snappy scoring of "My Heart Stood Still" bring new life to a decades-old chestnut by Rodgers & Hart. Charlie Parker's bebop blues "Cheryl" is also in great hands, opening with the tricky unison of Lynch's muted horn and Charlap's piano, ...

$13.49 Joe Lovano's big-toned tenor saxophone (think John Coltrane in the '50s, or Sonny Rollins, as reference points) has graced many diverse jazz contexts. From soul-jazz (Lonnie Smith) to straight-ahead big band (Woody Herman, Mel Lewis) to freer, edgier ...

Somewhere: The Songs Of Leonard Bernstein music CDs
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and ...
