| | Infinite Livez Bush Meat CD Infinite Livez Discography of CDs
Rapper Infinite Livez was, during his previous life, an art student and comic-book artist named Steven Henry. Those beginnings fully inform Bush Meat, his full-length debut for Big Dada, one of the prime sources for British rap (New Flesh, Roots Manuva) in the new millennium. Obsessed with fluids on a level that rivals the Piss Christ and flaunting his vision of comical, cartoonish soap opera, Infinite certainly doesn't bore with his rhymes. "The Adventures of Lactating Man" and "White Wee Wee" lead the way, the first presenting an unlikely case study ("I know it sounds filthy, but I get all milky/whenever my baby's squeezing my nipples, making me dribble") and the second an ode to sperm that sounds not explicit as much as oddly physiological. (Like Kool Keith's, Infinite Livez' raps are far too bizarre to rank as sensual.) Bush Meat mostly avoids the Big Dada bashment sound (unfortunately), though the rattling technoid piece "Claati Bros" comes close. An ill fit with the vocals, most of the productions are smoother '80s influenced tracks, though the opener (and highlight) "Worcestershire Sauce" sounds like a ten-years-after version of DJ Premier's classic productions for Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East. Bush Meat is a noble failure, a striking, unusual record within a rap genre that became surprisingly conservative after the turn of the millennium. ~ John Bush

Bush Meat
$15.24 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Bush Meat
$9.58 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over ...

Bush Meat
$13.35 Brazilian pianist Zarvos is heartily influenced by Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti, and it shows in this brightly hued recording, his third. Sensual Bahian dance themes are accented with minimalistic and European classical overtones combined with the mysterious, lilting signatures that define the South American diaspora, forming the core of this pretty, captivating music.
Zarvos, whose piano playing is quite tonic, tonal and tuneful, utilizes instrumentation that perfectly suits his music. Peter Epstein plays soprano saxophone exclusively, and is the focal point for the melodic base. Dorothy Lawson, cello, and Mauro Refosco, marimba, give support with beautiful rhapsodic statements of their own. Renato Pereira provides a percussive kindling and guitarist Romero Lubambo shows up on two tracks. The music is highly composed and the variation between pieces is hardly ...

$12.29 Much like its stylistic cousin TOTALLY R&B, the TOTALLY HIP HOP collection also casts a fairly wide net in defining its own genre. The inclusion of Mystikal ("Boucin' Back [Bumpin' Me Against the Wall]") and Ludacris ("Gossip Folks") on this collection falls into the no-brainer category, but when names like Justin Timberlake ("[Oh No] What You Got"), Brandy ("What ...

Organized just under a year ago by guitarist Tarricone and drummer Dan Caro, who met in November 2000 on a jazz standards gig in hometown New Orleans, the Brotherhood was formed sometime there after and started playing clubs in March 2001. The Brotherhood currently features the stellar front line of former Sun Ra/Kool & the Gang trumpet star Michael Ray and saxophonist par excellence John Ellis, a UNO jazz program graduate now based in New York City, also playing with the Charlie Hunter Quartet. The Brotherhood of Groove has sharpened its musical focus and managed to plumb greater musical depths than ever before. Propelled by Tarricone's guitar, acoustic bassist Alan Broome (spelled ...
