2004 album from the Finnish 'trollish hoedown metal' act. Ten tracks including the first single 'Trollhammaren'. Century Media. 2004.
Finntroll's second album, 2004's Nattfodd, offers yet another confounding manifestation of their weird splicing of black/death metal brutality with Finnish folk music -- more specifically, the quite uppity, polka-like form known as "humppa." Yes, it's all quite daft, to be honest, and we haven't even touched upon the no doubt drunken sextet's fantasy-based lyrics -- sung entirely in Swedish, naturally. Further enhanced by mood-setting sound effects (ocean sounds, horses galloping, birds chirping, seagull's squawking, etc.), mind-boggling tunes like "Fiskarens Fiende" and "Marksnadsvisan" are usually spared utter comedic dismissal only by the carefully assembled layers of sound underneath, which collate pummeling, dark-edged guitar riffs, spine-chilling death shrieks, and fully orchestrated walls of synths, strings, and chorales. Yet, having said that, it's rather telling that Finntroll's strongest moments (see the stunning title track and album-closing tandem "Grottans Barn" and "Routas Vaggvisa," in particular) seem to occur when dramatic minor chords crush those happy-go-lucky melodies and polka rhythms underfoot. Therein lies Finntroll's dilemma: how to sell a project so obviously rooted in a good giggle as a serious enterprise -- especially within a genre as oh-so-serious as heavy metal? Clearly, it comes down to a matter of opinion and a split decision. If the rudimentary folk-metal experiments of Amorphis were already more than you could stand, then stay the hell away from Nattfodd; but if you're starved for a little bit of humor and variety with your heavy metal, Finntroll's well-executed curiosity offers a welcome diversion. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| Nattfodd Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Finnish metal at its best I love black and folk metal, but Finntroll does a great job of combining both elements and more into a work unique in its own. It's fast, exciting, and above all, metal. Submitted by the9breaker2001 (Voluntown, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
amazing This album totally blew me away. Combining black metal with traditional folk music its just amazing to listen to. Every song is energetic, melodic, heavy and just insane. Finntroll rules Submitted by Gary (Simsbury) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Energetic, Unique Metal Album Nattfodd is an extremely energetic and fun album. These guys from Finland combine polka/humpa music with heavy metal to create music you can dance AND headbang to. The lyrics are written and sung in Swedish, but it doesn't matter in the least. The music is fun and energetic, heavy and melodic. One of the best albums of 2004. | | Wintersun CD (2004)
Nattfodd music CDs
$14.69 At first glance, a Finnish heavy metal band named Wintersun, whose album cover shows a fallen warrior lying face down in the snow, might elicit thoughts of simplistic black metal infused with pagan or anti-Christian messages, but it doesn't take long for this eponymous debut to prove that first impressions can be deceiving. In fact, the new project of former Ensiferum and Arthemesia vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jari Mäenpäa merges the hyper-fast precision of Yngwie Malmsteen-like guitar playing (witness the speedy "Beyond the Dark Sun") with the melodic sensibilities of post-Helloween power metal (see the more diverse "Winter Madness") and a homegrown passion for folk-styled songwriting descended straight from trailblazing compatriots Amorphis. ...
| | Amon Amarth Fate Of Norns CD (2004)
Nattfodd songs
$9.85 Amon Amarth's fifth full-length isn't so different than its 2002 predecessor, The Crusher. Musically, Fate of Norns is Spartan death metal built on epic, anthemic melodies, a perfect example of the Iron Maiden/death metal fusion tagged the "New Wave of Swedish Heavy Metal." And lyrically it's still full of Viking imagery, as songs like "Valkyries Ride" and "The Pursuit of Vikings" attest. It's the same theme that these guys have been hammering at since their 1996 debut mini-album, ...
| | Dark Tranquillity Character CD (2005)
Nattfodd album
$12.29 Having taken longer than most of Gothenburg, Sweden's death metal giants to reveal their greatness, Dark Tranquility have now arguably become that ever-popular subgenre's most enduring torch-bearers -- the living embodiment of melodic death metal midway through the '00s. And, in keeping with that station, 2005's Character marks the third installment of what most agree has been the band's most consistent career-phase; one which finds them, like other genre standard-bearers before them (Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, anyone?), reveling in their mastery of a formula they know so well it inevitably begs the question: have they become too comfortable in their niche? Are they stagnating? Well, there's a distinct difference between beating a dead horse and riding it to victory every time, and Character sure feels ...

| | Rifles At Recess To Whisper In Tongues CD (2003)
Nattfodd songs
$9.25 Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a death metal/black metal concert was filmed and that the sound was somehow screwed up. Watching the film without the sound, a knowledgeable headbanger would still have some idea what a band sounded like. How? Simply by observing the mosh pit. A grindcore band that plays at breakneck speed most or all of the time -- Carcass or Cannibal Corpse, for example -- would typically send the pit into overdrive and keep the moshers from slowing down (except between songs). But if the pit operates at different levels of intensity, it's because the band likes to change tempos a lot. Clearly, Rifles at Recess falls into the second category; if the band performed Whisper in Tongues in its entirety on-stage, the mosh pit would be going wild one minute and slowing down to a crawl the next. This is the sort of death metal/black metal disc that thrives on frequent tempo changes; if Rifles' members are pounding away at 500 miles an hour, a medium or slow tempo is just around the corner. Whisper in Tongues is also the type of album that some ...
| | Dwayne Sodahberk Unfortunately CD (2003)
Nattfodd album
$7.89 With the never-ending onslaught of Tigerbeat titles in 2003, one would think that eventually there would be an end to the impressive campaign, but evidently there isn't one in sight. Naturally, the label saves one of its best for last. After a long stint on the road during the summer/autumn of 2003 as part of Tigerbeat's annual "Paws Across America/Europe" tours with labelmates Kid 606 and DJ /rupture, Sodahberk wowed audiences with a blistering live set consisting of many of the tunes found on the appropriately titled Unfortunately. On this dark exercise into the world of electronic indie pop, Sodahberk brilliantly captures the feeling of a letdown right from the opening moments of the eponymously titled first track, and doesn't let up until the album's later moments. Exploring territory glazed upon by Dntel and Telefon Tel Aviv in a bit more of an upbeat light, Sodahberk takes these themes ...
