| | Horace Silver Cape Verdean Blues CD Horace Silver Discography of CDs
Horace Silver turned to his unique heritage for inspiration on THE CAPE VERDEAN BLUES, a classic mid '60s Blue Note date from the master of funky Latin-tinged jazz. His father hailed from the Cape Verdean islands, and he had exposed his son to the beauty of his native music when the pianist was just a boy. Silver uses that spicy island flavor for several of BLUES' finger-popping tunes. As a bonus, trombone great J.J. Johnson augments Silver's quintet for the second half of the date, creating a staggering front line that also includes Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson.
The title track, one of the most danceable tunes in Silver's repertoire, captures the celebratory flavor of Cape Verdean music and sets all toes tapping right from the start. The pace changes with "The African Queen," the group going from whisper to roar as the full dynamic range within each chorus of this bluesy classic is explored. Two quintessential Silver compositions, the waltzing "Pretty Eyes" and "Nutville," are presented here--the latter a relentless barn-burner that features Johnson in a fiery solo spot. The sultry rumba "Bonita" and Henderson's exciting "Mo' Joe" round out BLUES, one of Silver's finest endeavors.
This is part of Blue Note's RVG series.

Cape Verdean Blues
$12.89 Switching from his usual partners, the NW Prevailing Winds, Phil Kelly takes on a new collective of musicians here, the SW Santa Ana Winds. The move is from Seattle to Los Angeles physically, and similarly for the musical aesthetic. Despite the core sound being determined by Kelly's arrangements, the players surrounding him (with the exception of NW trumpeter Jay Thomas) change to a slightly more dramatic tone. The compositions are an intriguing mix of originals and standards, all rearranged as needed for the big-band setting. Duke Pearson's "Jeannine" opens up the album with a catchy old-school feel thanks to the almost movie-score sound of the band. This is followed by a large-scale tribute of sorts to Monk, with a deep blues inflection straight out of a smoky juke joint and nice soloing from Jay Thomas and Brian Scanlon. Continuing on, Scanlon steals the show on "Pleading Dim Cap," and "Daydream" is given a tender working with only some renovation. The title track is the softest, most introspective piece on the album, almost out of place with its string section amidst the mass of jumping, hopping numbers. Latin grooves play a part in the next two pieces, "Juan Beatov Stomp" (it's one beat off, in 7/8) and a slightly samba-fied rendition of "Body and Soul." The album finishes off with a casual afternoon groove and a hot ending in "Zip Code 2005." The band plays at the peak of its game here, ...
| | Dennis Derby Can You Spare Some Change Mate? CD (2008)
Cape Verdean Blues
$10.15 Can You Spare Some Change Mate?Being from England, I hope you like this number as much as my previous original called 'George Bush Blues,' which was played by the BBC during a recent interview with me. I wrote that song as a bit of fun about politicians who seem to be the same no matter where they come from. I just don't like them and never will! Fortunately, that song is getting some press publicity although the title frightened many people from associating with it and I hope this latest one receives even more, so if you like it please tell your friends. I backed Barack Obama whilst being interviewed after singing the song on East Midlands TV and I hope he gets elected and we'll soon know. Ethnic minorities need hope and it's about time it was given and the younger generations might do this.'Can You Spare Some Change Mate' is a protest song to help the people who beg on the streets because they often have no home address. I was once very near that situation and count myself fortunate in not being there.'George Bush Blues' is also a protest song about the way things were being done politically in a wonderful country where many of my heroes came from. People such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and that great person called Paul Newman who could have taught us all a lot. Earlier in my musical career, it was necessary for me to abandon my song writing and 'do the road,' working gig after gig for very many years, my marriage wrecked and living in bedsit land alone. I also had a day job once but being divorced, I had to pay my dues and am fortunate in having a daughter and son and I am proud of each of them. In recent times, I do get to see them both and am grateful for that. These days, I am almost fully recovered from open heart surgery for a second time so consider myself a lucky man. I rarely perform my songs on stage although I did a live show for refugee week this summer and in September David Francis from Brooklyn, New York invited me to appear with him, which was a pleasure. Personally, I love the freedom of sharing my music live on the streets for the fun of it late in the evening. This new song was inspired by what I saw down there in the darkness of my home city, which is Derby. Of course, I do my music elsewhere and say hello if you see me anywhere playing my black, Fender copy street guitar, which carries the sign: SMILE, BE HAPPY on it.In the shadows of the city centre night, Busking with my back to the wall, I see life on the streets as it is, sometimes dark and sometimes dirty. Party goers out for a good time, students merry and loud, police in twos or fours keeping order or just keeping counsel, and those who life has left behind asking people with more ...
