There are few surprises on Stereotyperider's covers album Under the Influence, Vol. 1, from the unimaginative title on down. Would anyone who has heard Stereotyperider's previous three albums' worth of post-hardcore indie rock be surprised to discover that they really like Archers of Loaf, the Pixies, Fugazi and the Descendents? Songs by all four of those bands, along with second-string grunge-rockers Seaweed, the proto-emo Quicksand and the Cure, appear here, all of them delivered in Stereotyperider's effective but occasionally monochromatic style. It's the Cure who come off the best, actually: their early single "Jumping Someone Else's Train" was a churning slab of dark-hued post-punk, and Stereotyperider nimbly transform it without losing the best qualities of the original. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of their faceless version of the Pixies' classic "Where Is My Mind?," which somehow comes out sounding like the kind of third-rate semi-emo alterna rock that the music supervisors of The OC must get pitched on a daily basis. The rest of the album is pitched between those two poles, luckily with most of the tracks closer to the former than the latter. Under the Influence, Vol. 1 was undoubtedly fun to record, and Stereotyperider fans interested in exploring the group's influences can use it as a jumping-off point, but it's definitely a minor effort. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Anekdoten From Within CD (1999)
Under The Influence, Vol. 1 music CDs
$18.99 After a long silence, Anekdoten reemerges into the darkness with a record that is both more mature than their debut, Vemod, and yet somewhat less polished than 1995's Nucleus. From Within feels like it was produced on a tighter budget, and the production can have a rehearsal-room feel -- although to be sitting in Anekdoten's rehearsal room is no small privilege. The opening title track is a band tour de force of crunching bass, swooping Mellotron, and clattering snare drums; one of the real high points of the album comes with the slowly building instrumental "The Sun Absolute," built around a single pulsing bass guitar note, ghostly Mellotron flutes, and sonar ping keyboards. But this fine album still falls a little short of its predecessor, for although Anna Sofi Dahlberg is still listed in the credits, her cello work is strangely absent from the mix. Its departure only serves to emphasize its importance in the band's sound in previous albums. ~ Paul Collins
ANEKDOTEN – BIOGRAPHY 2007-05-11Anekdoten are considered as one of the leading bands in contemporary progressive rock. Their intensive, dark, dynamic and for each subsequent release more original music have also made an appeal among metal-, goth- and post-rock fans all over the world. Anekdotens third studio album ‘From Within’ was released in 1999. On ‘From Within’ the band moved slightly away from the 70's influenced progressive rock of its predecessors and towards a more contemporary sound. Crohinga Well wrote:As we already pointed out several times, Anekdoten is one of Europe's ultimate psych/prog ensembles. Their powerful, tight and varied sound stunned growing numbers of fans all over the globe with their two studio albums "Vemod" (1995) [sic] and "Nucleus" (1996) [sic] and last year's "(Official Bootleg) Live in Japan" double CD (see CW15). Their latest studio album, "From Within", will only prolong their status since this 4-piece from Stockholm managed to produce a third batch of studio recordings that equals and even surpasses their previous work. They perfected their very personal sound that's based ...

Under The Influence, Vol. 1 music CDs
$43.35 This is a U.S. reissue of a 2000 European/Japanese release. It contains additional music and special packaging.
It might amaze anyone who only knows her for "Those Were the Days" to realize that of the 17 songs on this imported CD, only four appeared on either of Mary Hopkin's albums, and that only "Those Were the Days" has been available elsewhere on CD since the mid-'90s. Who would have thought she'd released that much music in just three years? This collection is partly related to the similarly titled 11-song LP compilation of Hopkin's work that appeared during 1972. That release was premature, a result of Apple Records' thrashing about trying to generate revenue, but time has made the need for such a collection a little more clear. Hopkin ended up leaving behind a considerable number of singles that never made it onto albums, all of which are featured here along with most of their B-sides; the latter are extremely important, because Hopkin usually preferred the B-sides, feeling they represented what she was really about as a singer far better than her A-sides. Almost all of the material is eminently listenable and much of it is extremely enjoyable. Hopkin may have regarded herself as a folksinger, but her intonation and articulation made her a very formidable pop talent as well, as revealed in her smoothly elegant version ...
