Hall Of Fame songs
$13.39 The key to the success of the Canadian bluegrass group John Reischman & the Jaybirds is that, despite the star billing given to its mandolin player, it is really an ensemble in which Reischman is more than willing to let his bandmates shine. The most obvious standout is bass player, singer, and songwriter Trisha Gagnon, who provides the title for the group's fourth album with her leadoff composition, "The Jaybird Song," in which she comments on the "five stellar jaybirds" she can see out her window, and sings lead on another five songs on the disc, two of which, the wistful "On My Way to You" and the alarming "Fire on the Mountain" (not to be confused with other songs of that name) she also wrote. A second major figure in the Jaybirds is guitarist Jim Nunally, who has four lead vocals and wrote two songs in addition to his playing duties, and who handled the recording duties from co-producing to mastering the disc. Banjo player Nick Hornbuckle and fiddler Greg Spatz get a composition each on the album as well, and with Reischman they hold up the bulk of the alternately lyrical and rapid-fire instrumental work. The bandleader himself gets a couple of songwriting credits on "Deception Falls" and "Mississippi Hoedown," both instrumentals. And room is also made for songs by Ralph Stanley and those bluegrass masters "Public Domain" and "Traditional." On the evidence of Stellar Jays, John Reischman & the Jaybirds are in their prime as contemporary bluegrass musicians capable of maintaining and extending the music's legacy. ~ William Ruhlmann
John Reischman & the JaybirdsSix years of touring across North America and Europe, four critically-acclaimed CDs and two Canadian Juno nominations have established John Reischman and the Jaybirds as a top-flight band in bluegrass music. With a unique traditional sound, the mandolin master and his band are known for powerful original songs and instrumentals, soaring vocals and refreshing interpretations of songs from the old-time repertoire presented with their own bluegrass twist.Stellar Jays, their fourth album, continues the strong tradition of great music from the Jaybirds. As well as orginal songs from John, Trisha and Jim, Greg and Nick both contribute sparkling instrumentals. There are covers of Ralph Stanley and Carol Elizabeth Jones tunes as well, and several numbers from the Public Domain.STELLAR JAYS NOMINATED FOR TWO 2007 CANADIAN FOLK MUSIC AWARDSNOMINATED FOR 2008 JUNO AWARDPraise for STELLAR JAYS:"A masterpiece--fascinating and fresh sounding....immaculate musicianship. Incorporates the best elements ...
| | Delta Moon Clear Blue Flame CD (2007)
Hall Of Fame album
$18.99 The Southern swamp blues-rock of Delta Moon takes a significant turn with the exclusion of a female frontperson/vocalist for the first time in the group's career. Guitarist/songwriter Tom Gray is the exclusive singer throughout, which gives this a slightly tougher, less overtly sexy texture than previous albums. Gray's grainy voice isn't polished, but its rough-around-the-edges crunch is perfect for the slippery twin slide guitar-propelled attack that Delta Moon have all but patented. Songs such as "Jessie Mae" (dedicated to and about blues woman Jessie Mae Hemphill) take funky, greasy riffs and drive them home through repetition and intensity as the rhythm section stays in the pocket. The style shifts slightly to include the greasy midtempo "Life's a Song," which features the dual intertwining guitars laying down the foundation, but generally the template remains consistent for the majority of these 11 tracks. Gray is a classy songwriter whose topics of ornery men and women generally mistreating each other are handled with sophistication and a deft touch unusual for the genre. Most impressive is the sense of restraint for a band that features two excellent slide guitarists (Mark Johnson is the other). The solos are short, sharp, and concise, and don't compromise the melodies for the sake of aimless wanking, a refreshing change for both Southern rock and blues played by guitarists. Gray revisits his own number one hit, "Money Changes Everything," in a fiddle-soaked version that sounds unlike either the original new wave-oriented approach by his first band, the Brains, or Cyndi Lauper's far more Technicolor -- and popular -- cover. But that is not typical of this more ...

$38.39 Very few of the British blues-rock bands of the '60s were still active in the 2000s; the exceptions to that rule included the Yardbirds (who broke up in 1968 and reunited for their Birdland album in 2003), Ten Years After and the long-running Savoy Brown. Of course, describing Savoy Brown as long-running is not to say that they have maintained the same personnel since their formation in 1966; Savoy Brown ...
