This is a self-titled release by the electronica outfit Jazzinho.
It's records like this that might one day make acid jazz guru Gilles Peterson up and quit, so complete is this fusion of jazz, Brazilian, '70s FM soul, and any other sound that evokes the image of congas and sequins. One is left to wonder where else the music could possibly go. Translated into "Sweet Little Jazz" in her native Portuguese, Guida de Palma is far more than just a chirpy vocalist meaning to conjure up Pan American fantasies of mojito-lubricated good times. In fact, she produced much of this album with her husband, Stephan Chalangea, joined by Da Lata mastermind Chris Franck, who wrote several of the songs. More upbeat than most of her contemporaries, including Richard Dorfmeister and dZihan & Kamien, yet remaining sultry at every turn, de Palma sings in both English and her native tongue; although either way, the lyrics seem secondary to the constant shake of the maracas. But her songs about love and lush life are exactly the sort of feel-good music one looks for when checking out the Latin jazz section of the iPod. This expanded release comes with additional remixes from London's Phil Asher and Zagreb's hottest house duo, Eddy & Dus, both of whom add some additional low-end punch for the dancefloor while allowing the live vibe to swing free. When Grupo X broke through in 2001 with their debut album "X-Posure", and much acclaimed single "Brand New Love", their individual and unique London blend of salsa, soul, bugalu and descarga won them many friends worldwide. From latin and jazz radio stations across the USA to a host of international club DJs (Louie Vega, Gilles Peterson, Osunlade, Patrick Forge, Bobbito Garcia, Rainer Truby, Nicola Conte, Jazzanova, Snowboy), "X-posure" was much loved and played extensively. With a busy live schedule, including being house latin band at London's legendary Jazz Cafe backing people like Jack Costanzo, Dave Pike, Jimmy Bosch, Bobby Matos etc, bandleader Jonny Enright took his time with the second album. Well, they say good things come to those who wait, so in 2006 here it is. "Food For Your Latin Soul" continues where "X-Posure" left off but with an even more adventurous musical dialogue. The true spirit of Nuyorican latin music is alive and well in the old-school analogue and live-band recordings, with heavy descarga, salsa dura, latin jazz, latin soul and bugalu still present. But Jonny and the band have added extra musical colour to the picture - Brasilian samba, Puerto Rican bomba, Afro-Cuban bata drums, ska, Afro-Peruvian rhythms, Salsoul style string arrangements. A musical pot-pourri that blends perfectly and naturally. The tightness and exceptional playing come from a band that's been together nearly a decade. Once again, soul diva Lisa Millett is back on lead vocals - a superstar in the house music scene having worked with Paul Oakenfold, All Seeing I and ATFC . Another major feature is the song-writing team of trombonist/ bandleader Jonny Enright and timbalero/drummer Jimmy Le Messurier, who together and solo have written all 11 numbers! In the fall of 1986 we had an experience that literally changed our lives. We were approached by a Christian Brother whom we barely knew and told that if we would follow him (in our car), we would receive a blessing. To make a long story short, we gathered up our 16-year-old daughter, hopped in our car, and followed this man approximately 7 or 8 miles into the country and into a cow pasture. We all got into his car and he put two worship tapes in succession into his surround-sound car stereo. Sometime during the two hours that followed, we were all literally transported out of the earthly realm and into some other place in the spirit. At some point, we all became aware of an external light that proceeded to get brighter and brighter and appeared to get closer and closer. The veil between earthly realm and spirit realm was so transparent that we actually thought that Jesus was coming for us. It turned out to be a deer-spotter! Nevertheless, the experience in the field that night transformed each of us.Throughout scripture, we have examples of men and women of God being caught up in the spirit realm, yet remaining in their earthly bodies. To name just a few, Isaiah was taken to the throne of God in chapter 6. John “was in the spirit on the Lord’s day” when Jesus appeared to him and allowed him to see events unfold that became the book of The Revelation.
