Anyone who thinks the steel drums are limited to calypso and other native West Indian styles has obviously never heard Andy Narell or his collaborators on this disc, the French band Calypsociation. Narell's compositions take the music headlong into jazz, and the richness of the steel pan sound ripples and sways throughout. For added flavor and texture, guests Michael Brecker, Paquito D'Rivera, and Hugh Masekela bring their horns, but they're the icing on a swinging cake (full praise to the percussionists who make the whole ensemble swing). The music is deliciously complex without ever sounding it. It works just as well on slower pieces like "Song for Mia," where the drums create a latticework of melody that remains gorgeously balanced. Granted, at times it veers perilously close to smooth jazz, but then it always steers faultlessly as far as melody is concerned. The extended pieces, like the title cut and "Coffee Street," sail through moods, and "Dee Mwa Wee" offers slightly darker hues in its lovely minor key, with Masekela's flügelhorn bubbling gently over the top. You have to hand it to Narell; his imagination and skill have made the steel pans into a mainstream instrument. ~ Chris Nickson

Passage
$15.29 BEHIND THE BRIDGE is an enhanced CD containing both a full audio program and multimedia computer files.
Combining jazz and world music was nothing new in the 1990s; Jelly Roll Morton had done exactly that in the 1920s with what he termed "the Spanish tinge." Nonetheless, world music was something that still had great creative possibilities for jazzmen, and one innovator ...

This ultracool saxman has some of the sexiest moves in smooth jazz and a dreadlock-based look that drives female genre fans wild. He's always focused on passionate, soprano-based tunes to express this sexuality in musical terms, so it's no surprise that one of the best tracks here is the power-passion ballad "Romantica." He's always been successful at adapting his lyrical sound and melodic sense to easy funk tunes, and here plays that middle of the road well on tracks like "Deska" (dedicated to his new bride Desi) and the soul classic "Wishing on a Star." But because we're so familiar with this side of his personality, it's always more fun to hear him fulfill a deeper potential, a bit outside the box. The ultragrooving, hip, and brassy title track, on which he blends soprano with tenor and slides over the baritone edges of Matt King, leads us to expect a slightly more swinging affair, but "Sweet Grapes" reminds us that Meadows is more about sensuality and cool soul vibes than the thumpy stuff. Another standout track ...
| | Gerald Albright Kickin' It Up CD (2004)
Passage
$14.15 It's hard to deny that saxophonist Gerald Albright often gave up playing "jazz" -- at least the snob definition -- in favor of urban radio and smooth jazz radio acceptance. During his years on the Atlantic label (1987-1997), his full-lengths contained big hits surrounded by lackluster songs. The exception was the "real jazz" album (snob definition again) Live at Birdland West, which kicked up the excitement a notch. After leaving Atlantic his first record for GRP, Groovology, was freer and more fun. Maybe it wasn't "real jazz," but it was really good. Nothing was so sweet and staid that it made you wince and the excitement was certainly back. Kickin' It Up continues along these lines, and if it isn't as well constructed as Groovology, it will at least keep the Albright faithful coming back. Albright still plays the jazz-pop that's kept him in the money, but once again he adds little flourishes ...
