| | Shannon Wright Over The Sun CD Shannon Wright Discography of CDs
With her days in Crowsdell far behind her, singer/songwriter Shannon Wright has established herself as a true solo artist. She's never been concerned with writing for the masses, for arriving at a sound that's both inventive and emotional is what's important to her. Looking at past albums such as her 1999 debut, Flightsafety, and 2002's gem Dyed in the Wool, Wright has emerged confident and convincing on her fourth release, Over the Sun. For what could possibly be the finest moment of her solo career, Wright tames herself, vocally and musically, for a warm storm of emotional richness. Producer Steve Albini joins her for a second time and assists Wright in focusing on the abrasiveness of her lyrics while lifting the strength of her guitar playing. That's not to say Wright is less expressive on Over the Sun. It's just that the straining theatrics of Maps of Tacit and Dyed in the Wool aren't nearly as distracting. Instead, Wright introduces Victory at Sea drummer Christina Files (the Swirlies, Mary Timony) for an added backdrop, and composes an autumnal atmosphere soaked in pianos, crisp guitars, and Wright's classic self-deprecating lyrics. From the bellowing chill of "With Closed Eyes" to the tumbling churns of "Black Little Stray," Wright doesn't let the songs get away from her. Over the Sun is so close and loaded in feeling, it's almost as if the instances are inside your head. If not, the hushing tweaking of "Plea" and the cracked stillness of "Throw a Blanket Over the Sun" will startle you. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

CMJ (p.6) - "Shannon Wright's new album is as noisy, passionate and raw as her last record, but does a better job of capturing the chaotic essence of her live performances." Mojo (Publisher) (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "OVER THE SUN finds Atlanta's Shannon Wright in raucous mood....[I]t feels like we're listening not to songs but to frank, emotional, diary pages." Over The Sun album
$13.15 Principally recorded at Zero Return, Atlanta, Georgia; Electrical Audio, Chicago, Illinois; Chase Park Studios, Athens, Georgia.
As indie rockers go, Shannon Wright is something special. After disbanding Crowsdell and embarking on a solo career, she released two wildly different but extremely high-quality solo recordings, the stark, acoustically haunted Flight Safety and the set of rage-rock excess that was Maps of Tacit. On Dyed in the Wool, Wright changes her direction by freeing herself of the constraints of having to play everything on her own records. She enlists help from mates in bands like Rachel's, the Boxhead Ensemble, the Lofty Pillars, Edith Frost, and the Rock*A*Teens, and the engineering ...

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Over The Sun album
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current ...
| | Okkervil River Black Sheep Boy CD (2005)
Over The Sun CD music
$10.15 Okkervil River continue to break the glass between messy nerves and orchestrated elegance on their fourth full-length, Black Sheep Boy, titled after the lovely song penned by Tim Hardin with which the band opens the record. However, their take on the song feels a bit rushed and uneventful, which knocks the tender breath from the lyrics and presents a clumsy start. Opening the record this way is the singular yet major complaint of the album, ironically pushing "Black Sheep Boy," the intended centerpiece, to the outskirts of the album's overall feel. Thankfully, the song spans only a short minute, so when "For Real" gently ...

John Zorn teams up with Bill Laswell and Scorn's Mick Harris to form Painkiller, who take Naked City's jazz-thrash template as a launching point, and then leap into the outer reaches of dub and improvised free jazz. This set, as advertised, contains the early EPs, Guts of a Virgin and Buried Secrets, their sole full-length, the double-disc Execution Ground, and a live concert recorded in Osaka in 1994 and featuring Boredoms vocalist Yamatsuka Eye on several tracks. Disc one is a curious exploration of the disparate strands of music that the trio would spin into improvisatory gold on Execution Ground. The hardcore ...

| | Come Get It: The Very Best Of Aaron Carter CD (2006)
Over The Sun songs
$7.69 In 2006, tween/teen-pop sensation Aaron Carter unveiled his second best-of collection. Although the disc shares many tracks with the earlier MOST REQUESTED HITS, this compilation is more focused, showcasing a well-selected handful of songs from each of the Radio Disney staple's three post-millennium albums. Highlights include Carter's cover of Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy," the hip-hop-tinged "Leave It Up to Me," and the bouncy "To All the Girls." The younger brother of the Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter, the singer/actor clearly picked up his family's song-and-dance gene, and this concise 12-track set shines the spotlight on many of his most entertaining musical moments.

| | Kola Ogunkoya My Darling CD (2005)
Over The Sun album
$13.65 Dealing with artists' ego, temperament, overblown expectations, and other unforeseen problems, is often the root cause of aggravation that faces the record labels the world over. Just because an artist sings as well, or better than anyone on the charts, should not be the only reason to sign him or her. Ceteris paribus, things being equal, many factors should be considered besides just an artist's voice. An artist must not only sound great in the studio, but also on stage. An artist must possess a professional attitude, an unsurpassed musicianship, and great skills. An artist must take his or her image seriously; possessing a decent personality is always an asset. In his first album for NPC Audioworks, the incandescent young saxophonist Kola Ogunkoya offers a euphonious smorgasbord of world musical favorites. The enchantingly mysterious sound of the wind instrument, saxophone, clears the way for dundun, the talking drum, which in turn opens the way for the rattling piano, congas, maracas, and omele, which eventually introduce the overpowering, but melodious, vocal of Kola Ogunkoya himself. Popularly known as Gbedumaster, Kola Ogunkoya is a multi-instrumentalist who has a solid background in Afro Jazz, Afro Pop, Afro Beat, and World Beat; with this album, he combines all the genres.Born on August 20, 1967 in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, the son of an itinerant police officer, Kola developed an early interest in musical instruments by watching a police marching band play across the barracks. He attended Ima Blom-Blom Nursery & Primary School at Owerri. He was barely in primary four when his father was transferred to Lagos. At an early age Kola experienced some of the vices of our society like discrimination, ...
