Though he's best known as the leader of long-lived post-punks the Mekons, workaholic polymath Jon Langford has been involved in countless musical side-projects under a dizzying array of monikers, and maintained a busy career as a visual artist. Startlingly, ALL THE FAME OF LOFTY DEEDS is only the second album he's released under his own name, arriving six years after his solo debut, SKULL ORCHARD. As usual, he's backed by many of the usual cohorts from his intercontinental musical coterie, including members of the Bottle Rockets and the Waco Brothers. With many of the tracks essentially home recordings, there's a distinctly more off-the-cuff feel here than on SKULL ORCHARD, focusing more attention on the songs themselves. Certainly, compositions as memorable as "The Fame of Lofty Deeds" (reportedly about the life of Roy Rogers) and the music-industry-skewering "Nashville Radio" deserve all the attention they can get. Given this excellent set of songs, the through line from LOFTY DEEDS to the best of Langford's work with the Mekons, Waco Brothers, et al, is entirely discernible.

Uncut (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's not heavy-handed or portentous, the music rollicking like a midnight special braced against the hard wind of his uniquely British delivery." Down Beat (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[R]ough-hewn rock slathered in country trappings executed with charisma and passion." Mojo (Publisher) (p.115) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's good: tough-guy honky tonk, broken-man country, infectious Clash-meets-Zydeco..." Is it just ironic that the Mekons, some 27 years into their journey from Leeds snot-nose guttersnipe art students to the elder statesfolk of barroom/club stage domination, have entitled their 2003 recording Punk Rock? Only partially. The truth ...

All The Fame Of Lofty Deeds songs
$14.29 The inclusion of Joan Baez's version of "Joe Hill" on the Woodstock album has been single-handedly responsible for keeping Joe Hill in the public consciousness. Sad but true, for Joe Hill, poet, songwriter, and organizer, was the most popular intentionally proletarian artist in American culture. Not an easy feat, especially considering how many people have tried to be popular proletarian artists. This album, named after Joe Hill's famous last words before he was executed by the State of Utah, is a testament to Hill's power ...

All The Fame Of Lofty Deeds songs
$15.19 Trying to fit the "essential" music of India into three CDs is no less impossible a task than, say, putting the "essential" music of the United States into three discs. Instead of judging this on the grounds of whether it's the most "essential" three-CD anthology of Indian music that could possibly be compiled (it isn't), it's more reasonable to evaluate it as a bountiful taster for listeners who aren't experts in the genre, but want a lot of it. On those grounds, it does a reasonable job, though the packaging isn't going to win any awards. At least some effort was made to group the tracks thematically, with one disc devoted to ...
