Teenbeat Sampler 2004 delivers over an hour of new music from the current roster of Mark Robinson's label, ranging from stalwarts like Flin Flon to newer acts like the Fontaine Toups, the latest project from Versus' former bassist. Regardless of how long the acts have been with Teenbeat, the songs on this collection are very much of a piece, spanning the shimmering indie pop, slightly abrasive rock, and experimental touches that have marked all of Robinson's projects (and the bands he's supported) ever since Unrest outgrew its hardcore tendencies. But even though the Teenbeat sound is well defined, it still isn't predictable or boring; Toups' "I Don't Like What You're Saying" and the Naysayer's "On Fire" are fairly straightforward pieces of confessional singer/songwriter pop, but they still fit in well with more lighthearted tracks like the disco-pop of Evelyn's "So So Fresh" and +/-'s sparkly "Walk in a Straight Line." The slightly soulful indie pop of Volumia's "You Are the Sun" and HollAnd's revved-up but still pretty "Soft-Core War" are two of the sampler's other standout tracks, and while interludes like Jonny Cohen's "(Theme From) Marine Boy" and Stick Insect's oddity "Stick Insect (Theme)" are less essential, they do add a sense of ebb and flow to the track listing. Robinson's own contributions, first with Flin Flon on the fizzy "Bonaventure" and again on "Silence!," which was produced by HollAnd's Trevor, also add to the collaborative feel of the album and the label; indeed, Teenbeat Sampler 2004's liner notes helpfully point out which of these acts are descended from older Teenbeat bands such as Toulouse, Aden, Hot Pursuit, and, of course, Versus. Speaking of that band, the Pacific Ocean, Ed Baluyut's project with Connie Lovatt, turn in a melancholy, lighter-than-air song in "People to People." While it may be a little too long for its own good, this collection is still entertaining proof that Teenbeat remains among the top indie labels. ~ Heather Phares

Teenbeat Sampler 2004 songs
$15.05 When one sees the name Marsalis Music, the question that comes to mind is "Which Marsalis?" Ellis? Wynton? Branford? Delfeayo? Jason? The answer is Branford; saxophonist Branford Marsalis is the founder/owner of Marsalis Music, a Rounder-distributed label that was launched in 2003. Since the '80s, it has been obvious that Branford and Wynton have very different tastes -- Wynton is known for being a jazz snob, whereas Branford is more eclectic and has done his share of guest spots on rock and R&B projects. So it isn't surprising that Marsalis Music is a jazz-friendly label but not a jazz-only label. Country Libations, which Branford produced for his company, isn't the sort of album that a jazz snob would release -- jazz, blues, and gospel are equally important parts of what acoustic guitarist/singer Doug Wamble does on this promising debut album. Wamble certainly isn't an easy artist to categorize or pigeonhole. He's a jazz instrumentalist, but he's also a blues singer -- he's a jazz vocalist, but he also sings African-American ...

$15.05 Robert Earl Keen is something of a barroom legend in his native Texas, where his gigs usually attract large crowds of well-oiled admirers who are predictably eager to hear comic songs like "The Five Bound Bass," "Barbeque," "Merry Christmas from the Family," and "Copenhagen" (which, since these are Texans we're talking about, is about the chewing tobacco and not the city). Of course, anyone who's spent much time with Keen's albums knows there's a lot more to his work ...

Teenbeat Sampler 2004 songs
$13.85 It's almost startling that the opening track off Philip E Karnats' album was recorded alone in his own basement studio, because there's a cleanness and a sense of structure that aren't often found in this kind of solo, low-budget indie rock release. "Too Much to Chew," with its list of dry statements ("Won't bleed 'cause I can't afford the ER stay/Won't spit it's too dry to be thirsty here/Won't sweat the scent is overwhelming") and droning bass, sounds surprisingly professional and relatively free of the excessive noise and pointless guitar riffs that often accompany similar artists. This is, however, ...
