There comes a time in every punk's life where he or she has to grow up, or at least acknowledge that maturity is just around the corner. blink-182 put it off for as long as they could, but ten years into their career and two albums after their big breakthrough, 1999's Enema of the State, they decided to make a stab at being grown-ups for their eponymous sixth studio album. As with many self-titled albums, the trio uses this as an attempt to redefine itself, and they have considerably expanded both their sonic template and lyrical outlook on blink-182. They're still rooted in punk-pop, but even songs that stretch no further than that sound are a little darker, a little restless, reflecting the overall mood of the record. In shorthand, this is the record where blink-182 delve into post-punk, opting for some appealingly sullen moodiness, off-kilter hooks, lots of sonic textures, and even a duet with the Cure's Robert Smith. Since the trio is an inherently catchy group, this is a far cry from neo-post-punk groups like Interpol or even the dynamically hooky Hot Hot Heat, but there is a greater variety of sounds on blink-182 than on any of the trio's other albums, and the songwriting is similarly adventurous, alternating punchy, impassioned punk-pop with weirder, atmospheric pieces like "Down" and "I'm Lost Without You." If nothing on the album has the immediate impact of "All the Small Things" -- though the opener, "Feeling This," comes close -- and if, on the whole, blink-182 isn't as bracing or visceral as Dude Ranch or Enema, so be it: there's more to explore on this album than any of their other records. It's an unexpected and welcome maturation from a band that just an album ago seemed permanently stuck in juvenilia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In the world of emo and pop-punk, 2003 not only found Blink 182 qualifying for the early bird special, but the creators of a self-titled outing that represents a big step in musical maturity for a band best known for serial nudity and a jokey, skate-punk attitude. Rest assured, this trio hasn't lost its taste for serious riffing and catchy-as-all-get-out harmonies, as evidenced by the thumping "Go," the jittery "Stockholm Syndrome," and the anthemic "Easy Target." For the most part, however, Blink 182 has cast a wide net in tweaking their sound, be it the stripped-down combination of Tom DeLonge's surf guitar and the finger snaps that define "Violence" or the tight shuffle drummer Travis Barker employs throughout "I Miss You." A singing and songwriting cameo by the Cure's Robert Smith on "All of This" makes for a strange surprise, but given the more serious approach taken by the Blink boys on this go-round, the moody ambiance finds Smith's appearance fitting hand in glove. Just when it would have been easy to write Blink 182 off a yesterday's news, the trio proves that there is musical life for thirtysomething punk rockers.Rolling Stone (12/25/03, p.104) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2003" Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.202) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Their lyrics are still unsophisticated and lovelorn, but even the poppiest tunes prove artful. | | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) (Import) Special Edition; Digipak
Blink-182
$15.55 Personnel: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak (guitar); Ed Roth (keyboards); Bobby Jarzombek (drums). Audio Mixer: Pete Martinez. Arrangers: Rob Halford; Ed Roth. At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child ...

| | Styx Caught In The Act CDs (1984)
Blink-182
$11.89 Personnel: James Young (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, synthesizer); Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards); Chuck Panozzo (vocals, bass guitar); John Panozzo (vocals, drums, percussion). Styx was one of the titans of the hugely popular AOR movement -- along with Boston, Foreigner, Journey, and REO Speedwagon -- embraced by the U.S. mainstream in the late '70s and early '80s. The end of the Chicago-based band's peak period coincided with one of the most ambitious and notorious projects of the time, the 1983 concept album Kilroy Was Here. Styx's tour to promote the album was a highly theatrical production based on the story line, which was conceived by vocalist/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung. The Kilroy Was Here tour was preserved for 1984's Caught in the Act: Live home video and double-live album (with identical cover art but different track listings and running orders). To make sense of it all, it's important to first understand Kilroy Was Here. The story concerns a futuristic, ultra-conservative, right-wing society that has outlawed rock & roll and enforces censorship. DeYoung plays a rock star named Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (note the acronym) who is framed for a murder during one of his concerts. The crime was actually planned by the malevolent Dr. Everett Righteous, the founder and leader of the Majority for Musical Morality (MMM), who is played by vocalist/guitarist James Young. Bass guitarist Chuck Panozzo plays Lt. Vanish, and drummer John Panozzo plays Col. Hyde; they are Righteous' henchmen. Kilroy is wrongly convicted and sent to a prison ship. This prison features Robotos -- robots mass-produced in Japan that take over many jobs performed by humans (a subplot that would also become relevant in real life). Vocalist/guitarist Tommy Shaw plays Jonathan Chance, the leader of an underground movement determined to bring back rock & roll and clear Kilroy's name. He manages to cut into an MMM mind-control television broadcast and play footage of a Kilroy concert. Chance's actions inspire Kilroy to overpower a Roboto guard, disguise himself as one, and escape. He leaves graffiti around the city as a message to Chance, and they meet up at the Paradise Theater (the title of Styx's chart-topping 1981 album), which is now the Museum of Rock Pathology that Righteous created using robots to re-enact Kilroy's last concert. Much of the rest unfolds as a normal concert CD with Styx cranking out hits and fan favorites like "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)," "Snowblind" (with Young mentioning censorship legislation efforts by the government in his intro), "Too Much Time on My Hands," and "Come Sail Away." A few Kilroy Was Here songs like "Don't Let It End." Styx always suffered the slings and arrows of critics, but the band really took a beating for the Kilroy Was Here album and tour. This fact, along with long-gestating internal tensions, resulted in Styx splitting up for several years while the members pursued solo projects. So, what about the big picture here? Perhaps the idea of music censorship seems silly, and looking back Kilroy Was Here and Caught in the Act: Live might appear heavy-handed and overwrought to some people almost 25 years after their release, but cultural and religious conservatives had truly stirred up the U.S. population at the time. They claimed that many rock artists' music and ...

| | Radiohead Com Lag (2plus2isfive) CD (2007) Digipak; Extended Play
Blink-182
$11.35 2007 reissue of the EP originally released in 2004 as a Japanese-only special collection to celebrate the Japanese leg of Radiohead's concert tour to promote the album "Hail To the Thief". Demand for the set was so high that EMI was forced to release the disc in the UK for a short time. This enhanced mini-album features hard to find single b-sides (treasured by most Radiohead fans), rare live tracks and remixes!
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Useful only to the most devoted Radiohead followers (who will probably have most of the contents to begin with), Com Lag is a patchwork of live material, remixes, B-sides, and other assorted scraps. Naturally, the release isn't nearly as cohesive as Hail to the Thief; its apparent intent is to supply the fans with another stream of the band's recordings, regardless of both how they fit together and how mixed the tracks are to begin with. The B-sides aren't nearly as solid as the ones collected on the Airbag/How Am I Driving EP, not to mention most of the intervening extras that trickled out between that release and this one -- though the live, solo piano version of Amnesiac-era B-side "Fog" is a definite standout, and the likes of "Paperbag Writer," "I Am Citizen Insane," and "Gagging Order" are hardly throwaways. ...
