Before the rise of the sampler, movie makers had to find ways to recreate the sounds of, say, a canon or gurgling water. Enter Wes Harrison, a guy who used his voice for the sound effects on such films as PETER PAN and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Harrison here used his talents to fine effect on this clever comnedy album.
Harrison is a one man sound effects machine that worked for the biggest studios in the 1950's and 60's. For example, the sound effects for the popular Tom and Jerry cartoons were Harrison "doing his thing!" The cannon fire in "Peter Pan" was Harrison "shooting his mouth off." In "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea", the gurgling water and the baby seal sounds were from Harrison. Here is the solo comedy album from a man with talent ad infinitum that appeals to people of all ages. Nostalgia Having purchased the original LP in 1966, and losing it to damage a short time later was very disappointing. To now have Wes on CD and to listen to this bloke belt out his sound effects on a decent sound system just blew my mind again, as it did the first time I heard it.
Wes was a master at his craft. Submitted by pcwh (Perth Western Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

better than beatboxing!! This guy is amazing! My dad inherited my late grandfather's LP collection and I found Wes Harrison among them. I thought beatboxing was cool, but I've never heard anyone making sounds of a train, horse, jet plane or bar brawl with their mouth before, and it's so convincing, too! If it wasn't done thirty or so years ago before modern computer technology, I wouldn't have believed it! Submitted by chris (perth australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bad Boy is another in a long series of compilations by the German Buffalo Bop label devoted to obscure rock & roll, rockabilly, and hillbilly bop from the '50s and '60s. Most of the tracks were originally released on tiny independent or custom labels, and all were mastered from vinyl for this CD. Buffalo Bop collections are often thematic, and Bad Boy hints at such with the inclusion of several songs with "bad" in the title: "Bad Boy" by Steve France, "Bad Bad Boy" by Johnny Lollar, and "Bad" by John Amory. These songs are in the minority, however, and the thread is not sustained throughout. The obscure Mickey Hawks and Bobby Roberts are each represented by several cuts, and thereafter Bad Boy moves into rocked-up covers of country songs (Sonny Deckelman's "Born to Lose"), hopped-up country music (Bill Watkins' "Missed the Workhouse"), straight rock and rockabilly, and a bizarre "Teen Age Riot" by the heavily accented Portuguese Joe. ...

You Won't Believe Your Ears
$13.69 With songs filled with heart, soul, craft and intelligence, The Brilliant Mistakes have risen to become one of the brightest lights on New York City's crowded music scene. Now with Dumb Luck, the band's second full-length release, the band has created a love letter to fans of classic pop songwriting."As a songwriter, you can't spend most of your life ingesting every word and note of your musical idols, and not want to aspire to that same level of craftsmanship and mainstream acceptance," says the band's Erik Philbrook. "Like most people, I can connect the best periods of my life with favorite songs that I was listening to at the time. We want to write, play and record songs that do the same thing; they get in the blood and stay there."Led by singer/keyboardist Alan Walker and bassist Philbrook, The Brilliant Mistakes' unique sound has led some listeners to make unlikely comparisons, such as "Squeeze meets Wilco" or "Ben Folds meets The Band." The truth is that The Brilliant Mistakes, while fans of such overseas songwriters as Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Neil Finn, remain true to their American rock influences, drawing upon pop, folk ...
