This two-fer CD contains "Brother" Dave Gardner's debut (Rejoice, Dear Hearts!) and follow-up (Kick Thy Own Self) long-players for RCA Records. Gardner's impact as a social and political humorist has been largely obscured by time as well as the reality that a majority of his seminal recordings remained out of print for over 30 years. Although considered "regional humor," the impact of these recordings is confirmed, as each disc attained an unprecedented number five on the Billboard album charts during the months of June and August of 1960, respectively. Gardner's Southern drawl and common-sense tales and fables first garnered him several appearances on the Jack Paar Tonight Show beginning in 1957. So by the time that Chet Atkins -- then RCA's head of A&R in Nashville, TN -- commissioned these discs, "Brother" Dave Gardner was a nationally known figure. Both albums are structured to mirror Gardner's live sets as well as television appearances. So in addition to the various yarns and fables, there are also a few musical numbers -- most notably a percussion and vocal piece that Gardner calls "space music." This particular bit of improvisation had an incalculably profound influence on a young Andy Kaufman, according to Kaufman himself. In fact, his initial forays into standup comedy incorporated variations of this silly shtick. A young man in modern-day long dreadlocks, sometimes tied back in a bandana, frame his head; he likes to wear earrings, a necklace and bracelets, and his western-style clothes. His appereance is markedly different from that of the old generation of Cuban musicians; his exterior has nothing in common with the soneros of the golden age. But this does not mean that this member of the younger generation has no respect for the traditions of his home country, quite the reverse, in fact, in musical terms Mayito continues the series of his ancestors with a great sense of history. On this album you will hear that this musician, educated at the Escuela Nacional de la Musica and the Escuela Superior de Arte, has a confident command of all the known Cuban stylistic genres, both the old and new. In some cases, intriguing albums are also erratic albums; the artist has a lot of interesting ideas but doesn't always know to make them work. While the artist deserves credit for originality and for taking chances, something is missing -- and the result is an album that shows some promise but is uneven. Lythion, thankfully, doesn't have that problem on their debut album, ...From the Beginning, which takes a lot of risks but is enjoyably consistent. Comprised of lead singer Ilyana Kadushkin and guitarist/keyboardist James Harrell, this New York City-based duo has a wide variety of influences and is not easy to categorize; perhaps ...From the Beginning is best described as alternative pop/rock or art rock with elements of soul and funk as well as cabaret and jazz. A variety of adjectives come to mind when this 2004 release is playing; Lythion's songs are theatrical, artsy, moody and mildly eccentric, but they are also soulful and bluesy. The expressive Kadushkin has a background in performance art, and it shows -- she can be a bit self-indulgent at times, although not to the point of becoming problematic. And the interesting thing about Kadushkin is her ability to be somewhat abstract without ever losing her gritty sense of the blues; if anyone is capable of bridging the gap between the artsy experimentation of Brian Eno, Tori Amos and Kate Bush and the neo-soul grit of Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige, it may very well be Kadushkin. That isn't to say that ...From the Beginning will ever be played on commercial R&B stations; this is a rock album first and foremost, but the soul influence is certainly present on this adventurous, impressively original debut. ~ Alex Henderson
