8th World Wonder
$13.05 This expansive compilation focuses on a series of disco songs released on theT.K. Records label, most of which date from the mid- to late '70s. Despite the seemingly limiting "disco" tag, The Best of T.K. Disco presents a nicely diverse cross section of material from this genre: Indeed, the music covers everything from the lush, almost symphonic Euro-disco of Beautiful Bend's "That's the Feeling" to the earthy, bass-driven funk stylings of Uncle Louie's "Full Tilt Boogie." Along the way, it unearths plenty of lesser-known disco tunes that will delight hardcore fans of this style: Tempest Trio's "Love Machine" mixes symphonic lushness and percussive grooves to create a multi-layered dance track and "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas is a cheeky tribute to the famous adult's club of the title that features a unique jazz-scat vocal break. A few of the inclusions don't live up to the level of these highlights (Quartz's "Beyond the Clouds" is a rather hookless synthesizer showcase that sounds very chintzy when stacked up against the otherwise richly produced tracks here), but The Best of T.K. Disco offers enough solid disco tracks to make it worth a spin to dance music enthusiasts on the hunt for lesser-known dance epics. ~ Donald A. Guarisco
| | Journey: The Very Best Of Donna Summer CD (2006) Bonus CD
8th World Wonder
$12.25 Initial pressings of THE JOURNEY included a bonus CD featuring 12" remixes.
As one of the few performers from the disco era to have a career beyond one-hit wonder status, Donna Summer has continued forward on her creative path well into the 1990s, necessitating the release of the two-disc THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER. Summer neophytes will get their share of this diva's classic '70s fare including soft-core anthems ("Love to Love You Baby"), streetwalker tributes ("Bad Girls"), erstwhile Jimmy Webb covers ("Macarthur Park") and songs that became ubiquitously associated with proms and weddings ("Last Dance"). Disco aficionados also get a taste of deeper cuts, including "Heaven Knows," "I Feel Love," and "Bad Girls."
This set also features Summer's foray into more straightforward pop like "She Works Hard for the Money" and "This Time I Know It's for Real," the comeback dance-pop smash that also doubled as a collaboration with '80s production team Stock/Aitken/Waterman. Although the second disc only contains five songs, it showcases the lengthy extended versions of songs that dance music fans are accustomed to hearing. This means you get 12" inch remixes of "I Feel Love" and "Hot Stuff," along with an epic version of "You're So Beautiful" that clocks in at just under 11 minutes.
Includes liner notes by Brian Chin.

| | Madonna Remixed & Revisited CD (1999) Extended Play
8th World Wonder
$6.35 "Genie In A Bottle" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
"What A Girl Wants" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Christina Aguilera rocketed to the top of the charts with the smash hit "Genie in a Bottle" from this self-titled debut and placed herself among a leading generation of young, multi-talented pop artists. Like fellow performers Britney Spears, J.C. and Justin of 'N Sync, and actress Keri Russell, who stars in the TV show Felicity, Aguilera is a graduate of the New Mickey Mouse Club television program.
Songs such as "What a Girl Wants" with its guitar-driven melody, and the soulful gospel strain of "So Emotional" show Christina Aguilera's polish. Some of the other tracks that stand out are the powerful "I Turn to You," which was written by Diane Warren; "Reflection," which was produced by Matthew Wilder; and the dance floor mover "Love Will Find a Way," from hit makers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers.
Always one for a remix, Madonna follows the AMERICAN LIFE album with an EP that includes alternate mixes of four album tracks. "Nothing Fails (Nevins Mix)" glides along on an acoustic guitar line and skittering, distorted beats, while 1980s revisionists Mount Sims take on "Nobody Knows Me" with a dirty keyboard/vocoder barrage. Finally the Headcleanr rock mixes of "Love Profusion" and "American Life" are energetic, guitar-heavy versions of the originals.
Also included on REMIXED & REVISITED is a live recording of the Material Girl's show-stopping 2003 MTV Video Music Awards performance of her "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood" medley, featuring the additional diva trinity of Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Missy Elliott. On "Into the Hollywood Groove," Missy pops by again for a studio fusion of Madonna's "Into the Groove" and the aforementioned "Hollywood." Topping everything off is the previously unreleased "You Honesty," a buoyant, funky track from the BEDTIME STORIES
