Isaac: Missa Paschalis, Etc / Rombach, Officium Ensemble
$9.95 Trans-Siberian Orchestra includes: Paul O'Neill (conductor). In 2004, Trans-Siberian Orchestra finished their "Christmas trilogy" with the massive -- some would say ponderous -- The Lost Christmas Eve. Wasting none of the holiday season's precious shopping time, the Christmas Trilogy box set landed two weeks after that album, giving the band's loyal fan base a set to give -- some would say inflict -- to their friends. Then again, maybe they'll just want to hold on to the set since there's a DVD with appearances by Jewel and Michael Crawford and the lavishly illustrated booklet includes all the lyrics and background stories. You really should dabble in Trans-Siberian's dramatic, huge world of Christmas music through the eyes of classic rock before laying down the money for the set. If you just need a bit of this 60-piece, the first album is the most inspired, but it's not enough for most who get hooked. Although the next two albums gave diminishing returns, Trans-Siberian producer/mastermind Paul O'Neill kept pouring his heart into the music and always offered some genuine thrills. Great presentation and a packed DVD make up for a lot of note-spinning on the third disc, and what was a wintry night made for besides curling up with a precious, ...

| | Glass: Solo Piano / Philip Glass CD (1989)
Isaac: Missa Paschalis, Etc / Rombach, Officium Ensemble
$9.99 Mention "minimalism" and certain names will pop up, both within and outside of the classical world: Terry Riley, Steve Reich, John Adams. The most famous one, however, would be Philip Glass. Unlike most 20th Century composers, Glass has reached far beyond the concert hall: his work includes film soundtracks (THE TRUMAN SHOW, THE THIN BLUE LINE), multimedia presentations ('1000 Airplanes on the Roof"), and collaborations with pop/rock writers/performers (his SONGS FOR LIQUID DAYS album). With SOLO PIANO, Glass presents himself "unplugged" - no electronic keyboards or synthesizers, and no overdubs, either - just solo piano. Here, Glass' connection to the established "classical" tradition is most evident. Though his pieces are "minimal" ...

$14.35 | | Cage: Litany For The Whale / Hillier, Theatre Of Voices CD (2002)
Isaac: Missa Paschalis, Etc / Rombach, Officium Ensemble
$9.89 Named after the longest work on the CD, this is an excellent and beautifully performed collection of familiar and rarely given vocal works by John Cage. It is performed by the Theatre of Voices, directed by Paul Hillier, with guest performer/composer Terry Riley. These include: "Litany for the Whale" (for two voices), "Aria No. 2" (for voice and electronics...rolling thunderclouds and other weather and sounds, with vowels and consonants from five languages), "Five" (for five voices...sustained, pure tones...Cage indicates that the notes "should be brushed into being"), "The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs" (the classic song for voice and closed piano, 1942), "Solo for Voice 22 from the Songbooks" (for two voices and electronics...the multiple "meanings" of breath inflections), "Experiences No. 2" (for solo voice, 1948), "36 Mesostics and not re Marcel Duchamp" (two voices and electronics, 1970), "Aria" (for two voices and electronics...a fascinating new realization for two voices...interesting to compare with the classic solo Cathy Berberian realization, 1958), and "The Year Begins to Be Ripe" (from Songbooks -- Solo for Voice 49, Song with Electronics -- Relevant: The Year Begins To Be Ripe, using a text from Henry David Thoreau's journal...for voice and closed piano, 1970). ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny Paul Hillier has previously explored the edges of classical music, from the Middle Ages to the late 20th Century, and with his Theatre of Voices he seems to have found material in John Cage to span his interests. A couple of the Cage creations, including the title opening piece and the closer, "The Year Begins to be Ripe," are suggestive of early liturgical chants, ...
