Mike LeDonne, who is better known as a pianist, is also a talented organist in the Jimmy Smith/Charles Earland/Don Patterson tradition. His quartet set is straight-ahead hard bop rather than soul-jazz, with excellent solos from LeDonne, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, and guitarist Peter Bernstein (who is particularly strong on "Delilah") and fine support from drummer Joe Farnsworth. Most memorable are a pair of medium-tempo blues ("You'll See" and "Pisces Soul"), "Silverdust" (which is based partly on the chord changes of "King Porter Stomp"), and a cooking version of "Close to You." Although nothing innovative or overly surprising occurs, the music is well played and Alexander in particular has plenty of spirited solos. ~ Scott Yanow

Smokin' Out Loud songs
$15.29 For bassist/composer Charles Mingus, many of the leading edge trends of the late '50s-early '60s did not significantly alter his musical outlook--an outlook he had been nurturing since the 1940s when he first made his mark as Baron Mingus. "Mingus, The Composer" was Charlie Parker's affectionate commission for the Californian bassist, who first made waves with "Mingus Fingers" for Lionel Hampton's big band in 1948. As a result, when Miles came along with fresh notions of modality, Mingus could point to his own decade-long work with pedal point. Likewise, when Ornette Coleman introduced his free form, non-chordal approach to blues and modern jazz, Mingus responded with his legendary Booker Ervin/Eric Dolphy/Ted Curson/Dannie Richmond ensemble (MINGUS AT ANTIBES), extending on ideas he'd been developing for years ("Pithecanthropus Erectus").
Part of what makes MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS such a rich, enduring, listening experience is in the way it delineates the major themes and streams in Mingus' writing, and all of his idiomatic gestures and tonal colors. The rough-hewn polyphony of "II B.S." (a kissing cousin of "Haitian Fight Song") is driven along by the composer's indomitable, thrusting bass line, reflecting the experience of early New Orleans ensembles. Multiple voices syncopate to create a rich melodic fabric and ferocious rhythmic intensity, spotlighting the sanctified tenor ...

Smokin' Out Loud songs
$10.15 "I was first awakened to the buoyant life force of jazz in Hawaii by the release in 2004 of "Sounds of the City" by the Honolulu Jazz Quartet led by bassist John Kolivas. My criterion of any kind of music is whether it makes me feel more alive; and on listening to "Sounds of the City," I called John Kolivas to find out more about the quartet and the jazz scene in Hawaii." - Nat Hentoff"The Honolulu Jazz Quartet is one of the state's most popular contemporary jazz bands, and Sounds Of The City is a satisfying document of their straightahead style." Todd Jenkins, Downbeat magazine (December 2004)"I was completely taken aback by a group of guys with a lot of heart and one of the most impressive jazz recordings I have heard to date." Sheldon T. Nunn, JazzReview.com "When you think of Honolulu, jazz probably doesn't come to mind. It didn't for me. Now it does. Sounds of the City is an inspired set by an inspiring group. In that sax and a rhythm section category, this is the finest I've heard this year." Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz.com - Posted November 12, 2004"To find an independent group from Hawaii in the Top 50 is awesome, especially since it is their first release." - Sheldon Nunn, JazzReview.com"Love the CD!" - Frank Johnson at WRTI - Philadelphia"The HJQ, formed in 2001, a band firmly rooted in harmonically sophisticated but smooth post-Bop." - Cadence Magazine, May 2004 "You guys were great!" - James Ingram, at the Honolulu Symphony Pops concert, October 3, 2003. Smokin' Out Loud CD music
$11.49 STILL HUNGRY is a 2004 re-recording of Twisted Sister's 1984 album STAY HUNGRY.
Stay Hungry is to Twisted Sister what Metal Health is to Quiet Riot, Operation: Mindcrime is to Queensr˙che, and Appetite for Destruction is to Guns n' Roses -- it isn't their only worthwhile release, but it is widely regarded as their best and most essential. So when Twisted Sister decided to re-record one of their albums in 2004, the most logical choice was Stay Hungry -- and Still Hungry finds a reunited Twisted Sister revisiting that 1984 classic 20 years later. Of course, it's impossible to improve upon perfection, and some fans of Sister's '80s output will wonder if favorites like "We're Not Gonna Take It," "I Wanna Rock," and "Burn in Hell" really needed to be re-recorded. But here's the thing: according to guitarist Jay Jay French, Stay Hungry wasn't perfection -- at least not from a production standpoint. French had problems with the way Tom Werman produced Stay Hungry; Werman and Atlantic Records insisted on a glossier, lighter sort of production, while Dee Snider and his bandmates had envisioned a tougher, harder, heavier sound (and didn't get their way). Stylistically, Still Hungry isn't a big departure from Stay Hungry; Sister plays the same nine songs in pretty much the same fashion and offers them in the same order (adding seven bonus tracks, which range from 2000's previously released "Heroes Are Hard to Find" to some tunes that were written in the '80s but went unfinished). On Still Hungry, bassist Mark Mendoza's production does, in fact, give Stay Hungry's nine songs a ...
