To call Frigg an extension of JPP is true -- but it's also a statement that doesn't do them justice. Yes, three members are related to JPP members, JPP's Timo Alakotila produced their record, and they use a similar massed fiddle lineup. But add a pair of Norwegian hardanger fiddles and some Dobro from guitarist Tuomas Logrén, and you have an interesting mix of sounds that extends far beyond the JPP roots. There's an obvious liking for American roots music, as with "Ril," which could almost be old-timey, or "Ruunankummi," where the Dobro really takes over. But they certainly don't forget where they're from, as on "Eräänä Kauniina Päivänä," with its aching melody and plenty of space. That alone would be enough to suggest Frigg as a band with a large future. Married to the rest of the album, there's absolutely no doubt about it. ~ Chris Nickson

Regardless of opinions about White Stripes leader Jack White's credentials to produce country-music queen Loretta Lynn (he toured with the legendary singer and dedicated 2001's WHITE BLOOD CELLS to her), there's no denying that VAN LEAR ROSE significantly kick-started Lynn's career both commercially and artistically. In a move similar to Rick Rubin's 1990s Johnny Cash productions, White enlists members of his garage-rock cohorts the Greenhornes, along with a couple of country ringers, to back Lynn, giving her the grittiest, most rock-tinged production of her long reign.

New York-based Irish singer Susan McKeown employs both an English and a Gaelic title for this album, which is known both as Blackthorn: Irish Love Songs and An Draighneán Donn: Amhráin Grá. That is appropriate, since she also sings most of the songs in Gaelic. McKeown has become something of a musicologist, and here she has done extensive research into traditional material; the songs are extensively annotated in the CD booklet, both by her and by Tom Munnelly, to trace the origins of the tunes back centuries. But McKeown is not simply an aural historian, as she does not hesitate to manipulate the music to her own ends. For example, although the original lyrics to "I Am a Girl from the Suir-Side," a song dating back to the 16th century, are lost, she substitutes an English poem of similar vintage that fits the music for "Caleno Custure Me." And the spare instrumentation, usually consisting of only one or two instruments, sometimes plays arrangements that range far from traditional Celtic sounds. "'S Ambó Éara (The Man for Me)," which also features singer Róisín Chambers as well as Edmar Castenada on harp and Robbie Harris on percussion, sounds less like a Scottish folk song than an African one. The problem with Scandinavian folk music is usually that dang jaw harp. On the third album from Finnish-Norwegian power folk band Frigg, the jaw harp is there, but it's nicely buried in the sound by multiple fiddles, mandolin, guitars, the occasional bagpipe, dobro, and even horns. The band's sound is lushly produced and at times almost slick, but their energy keeps them from tipping over into sappiness. This three-CD set from the U.K. is one disc slimmer and not quite as comprehensive as the 1993 American box set Bing! His Legendary Years, 1931 to 1957, but it makes for an excellent second choice. The Golden Years of Bing Crosby focuses, as its title suggests, on the period when Crosby was firmly situated at the top of the world, beginning with his earliest hits from 1931 and following his career into the mid-'40s, by which time the crooner was being eclipsed by Frank Sinatra and others.
