Every song on Susan McKeown's album Sweet Liberty is credited to "Traditional" as author, which is frequently the case with her recordings. But McKeown's approach to this material, which she has gathered from friends and from old books and recordings (as recounted in her notes), is often anything but traditional. "Oró Mhíle Grá (A Thousand Times My Love)" is a collaboration with Ensemble Tartit, a singing group from Mali, and its combination of Celtic and African elements makes for a stirring hybrid. On "Eggs in Her Basket," McKeown is accompanied by the Mexican group Mariachi Real de Mexico, again adding an unusual interpretation to a traditional Irish tune. But even when she is using musicians who perform in a more familiar Celtic style, such as Flook, the Anglo-Irish quartet that backs her on the leadoff track, "The Wee Birds All Have Come and Gone/Fisherman's," McKeown makes her versions of the songs distinctive by her combinations of different compositions, her striking arrangements, and her haunting voice, which at times recalls Sandy Denny's (and therefore also that of Denny sound-alike Natalie Merchant, whom McKeown has accompanied in performance). Sweet Liberty is traditional enough to please fans of Celtic music in its oldest forms, but it also suggests new directions for the style, and it serves as a showcase for an impressive singer. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Flatlanders Now Again CD (2002)
Sweet Liberty CD music
$13.35 Even by the most lackadaisical release schedule, three decades is a bit of a wait between a group's first and second albums. Of course, this pause in the discography of progressive-country cult heroes the Flatlanders can be explained by the fact that each of the three members spent the time in the middle becoming respected solo singer-songwriters. Still, it sounds like no time passed at all between the posthumously released MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND and the reunited bliss of NOW AGAIN, as the reunited band's mix of traditional country, Townes Van Zandt-like troubadourism, and cowboy mysticism remains ...
| | Tift Merritt Bramble Rose CD (2002)
Sweet Liberty music CDs
$12.59 In his short story Billy the Kid, Steve Earle spun the tale of a fresh-faced kid who arrived in Nashville with a handful of brilliant songs, cut a stone classic album, scored a record deal most musicians would give their eye teeth to get, and married the girl of his dreams, all in a few weeks before cruel fate caught up with him. While one can only hope the powers that be have a more generous final act planned for Tift Merritt, listening to her first album, Bramble Rose, is a reminder that such things could possibly happen in the real world. If Bramble Rose is a bit short of perfect, it leaves no doubt that Merritt is already a talent of the first order. As a singer, she has a simply gorgeous vocal instrument (imagine the passion of Lucinda Williams and the real-world twang of Iris Dement fused with the silky beauty of Emmylou Harris), and her songs are nearly as impressive as her vocals. At 27, Merritt's lyrical perspective speaks of the often-unfortunate twists and turns of fate, but without bitterness or spite, and she can jump from the ...
| | Linda Thompson Fashionably Late CD (2002)
Sweet Liberty songs
$14.65 Linda Thompson's first recording in 17 years is a stunning brace of poetics and grace. For a woman who literally lost her voice for more than a decade due to a stress disorder, Thompson reveals that she is at full strength as a vocalist, and perhaps more importantly, with this recording she clearly establishes herself as a songwriter as well. Recorded in the U.S. and in England, Fashionably Late feels like less of a comeback offering than it does an elegant statement of aesthetic from a talent who, along with Sandy Denny and Jacqui McShee, literally defined these terms for the British folk genre. There are many guests on this ten-song set, including Kate and Joe Rusby; Martin and Eliza Carthy; Van Dyke Parks; Dave Mattacks; Chris Cutler; Dave Pegg; Rufus and Martha Wainwright; ...
| | La Oreja De Van Gogh Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida CD (2003)
Sweet Liberty album
$10.09 LO QUE TE CONTE MIENTRAS TE HACIAS LA DORMIDA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work -- nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery -- this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their earlier efforts. Montero and keyboard player Xabi San ...
| | Kate Campbell Blues And Lamentations CD (2005)
Sweet Liberty CD music
$13.69 It's perhaps understandable if Kate Campbell fans have pictured her as standing -- in an artistic manner -- still for the last several years. Her most recent albums have either consisted of covers (Twang on a Wire) or re-recordings of early material (Sing Me Out and The Portable Kate Campbell). So the release of Blues and Lamentations is a welcome return to fine, deep albums like ...
