Few record labels in history have had the impact of Berry Gordy's Motown. It's a sound, a spirit, and a hit-making machine. In the 1960s, if the Number One song on the Billboard charts wasn't by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, it was likely by the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, or another Motown artist. Wonder, Gaye, Lionel Richie, and others continued the tradition through the '70s and into the '80s, Boyz II Men dominated the charts in the early '90s, and as the 21st century dawned, the Motown name was still a formidable force in R&B and soul.
With more than two dozen tracks, MOTOWN #1'S collects a remarkable cross-section of the biggest hits that the label unleashed over the course of nearly 50 years. These include the Temptations' harmony-laden "My Girl," the Supremes' dramatic "Stop! In the Name of Love," and the Four Tops' kinetic, sunny "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)." Also featured is the unbridled soul energy of Jr. Walker & the All-Stars' "Shotgun" and the Marvin Gaye's haunting milestone "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." As many times as these songs have been heard, they still sound unbelievably fresh and beautiful.

Motown #1 brought back happy memories. I heard this CD while shopping at a shoe store in Williamsburg, VA. I actually asked the clerk what the title of the CD was because I just had to have it. I have many Motown CDs, but this has the greatest collection of all. It brought back many memories of being a teenager in the '60s back in PA.
Motown and the Beatles. We just couldn't get enough of them.

Wonderful Motown Album Not exactly the most popular music genre of my lifetime, I’ve never really considered myself a fan of Motown music. A week ago it probably would have been hard for me to name more than five popular Motown artists. Then a few days ago my mom bought this new CD (I think it came out like a month ago) called Motown #1’s. She was playing it around the house and I actually found myself humming along to most of the songs…I know, sounds cheesy, but I never realized before how much I actually liked Motown artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes… Anyways, the whole CD is actually really great and it has all the big hits of that time. I couldn’t believe that I recognized and knew the words to almost every song! I’m starting to become a bigger fan of Motown and anyone who isn’t sure what they think about Motown music (or already loves it) should definitely check this out.
