| | Have I Sinned: The Greatest Hits Of Donnie Elbert CD (2003)
Talcum Soul, Vol. 4
$10.69 Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before ...

| | Nella Dodds This Is A Girl's Life: Complete Wand Recordings CD (2007)
Talcum Soul, Vol. 4
$14.55 Both sides of all six singles Nella Dodds released on Wand in the mid-'60s are on this compilation, along with three outtakes from the same era. When you add in the thorough liner notes (with quotes from Dodds herself), it amounts to a definitive job on what's likely to be the only Nella Dodds album ever issued, as she didn't record again, though she was only in her teens at the time. Though all of this material was cut in Philadelphia, more often than not it's uncannily similar to the mid-'60s Motown sound, and particularly similar to Mary Wells and the Supremes. Such similarities aren't coincidental; Dodds covered some of the same Eddie Holland-Lamont Dozier-Brian Holland compositions Wells and the Supremes did, including "Come See About Me," which made it up to number 74 in the charts (though the Supremes' version was far more successful, ...

Talcum Soul, Vol. 4
$85.49 Berry Gordy moved Motown from Detroit to Los Angeles at the end of 1968 but, like an earthquake, not all of the aftershocks were felt after the initial shift. It took a while for all the dust to settle, for Motown to start feeling like it belonged to Hollywood instead of the Motor City, for the label to get to the point where the showbiz began to eclipse the soul, and that year was 1971. That year, Gordy slowly started to recede from the day-to-day operations of the label, choosing to pursue interests in film and television, but Motown hardly shut down in his absence: they churned out more 45s than ever, releasing so many ...

Talcum Soul, Vol. 4
$12.65 I was born in the early afternoon of May 11th, 1976. I didn\'t cry upon entering the world. Though I would cry later. My mother got pregnant while on her period. She considered my birth a miracle. My father was grateful. I was (and still am) their only son. I was held tightly by my two older sisters. Slowly I grew. Sleeping only when the sun shined. I loved looking at the moon. My parents filled the home with happiness. Honesty. And music. Two giant wooden speakers ten feet in the air. Boz Skaggs in the rafters. Carly Simon on the ceiling. Melodies made me cry. Adjustments to my body & mind. Puberty was inevitable. School shredded the fabric. A tapestry of thought was torn by teachers. Often I would disappear into a canyon. Or sit by a river. Alone. Nature made me cry. Despite my disappearing. I had many friends that wanted to be close. Until they found a friendship with drugs. While I found a friendship with drums. Rhythm I didn\'t know I had. Rolled from my heart. Pounding away the pain with very small sticks. I never joined a band (or a religion). Praying made me cry. College wasn\'t colliding with my course. Still I studied. Learning about longing, love, & life. I once fell in love. But I didn\'t fall far. Many odd jobs and many odd thoughts passed. Still living with the parents that gave birth to me. 25 years ago. Dysfunction, dependency & doubt. Circumstance made me cry. Until the day a guitar was given as a gift. Then everything changed. Songs streamed from my spirit. Choruses called from ...
