Twenty Songs Of The Century music CDs
$8.05 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," ...

| | Heath Brothers As We Were Saying CD (1997)
Twenty Songs Of The Century music CDs
$9.89 Recorded in New York, New York on February 23 & 24, 1997. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
During the Modern Jazz Quartet's temporary retirement from 1975-83, bassist Percy Heath teamed up with tenor and soprano great Jimmy Heath and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath (who left after a few years) to form the Heath Brothers. There had been occasional reunions since then, but this is the first record done under the Heath Brothers name in over a decade, and it finds the musical communication between the three siblings as strong as ever. Joined by either Stanley Cowell or Sir Roland Hanna on piano and such guests as guitarist Mark Elf, trombonist Slide Hampton, trumpeter Jon Faddis (brilliant during his three appearances) and percussionist James Mtume (Jimmy's son), the Heaths perform a varied yet continually colorful set. The music is largely bop-oriented and includes six likable originals, "I'm Glad There Is You," "Daydream," and Fats Navarro's "Nostalgia." Although Percy has some solo spots, as do the ...

Twenty Songs Of The Century CD music
$12.09 The great New Orleans trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen passed away on April 17, 1967, from pancreatic cancer. After he was diagnosed as terminal, he made a final tour of England, playing with Alex Welsh's septet. The previously unreleased music on this CD came out for the first time in 2001 and is taken from that tour. Allen sounds surprisingly strong on trumpet and is quite cheerful, yelling out encouragement to the other musicians. The British Dixieland band -- which includes trumpeter Welsh, trombonist Roy Williams, and Al Gay ...

| | Jim Allio aka James Anthony Second Chance CD (2009)
Twenty Songs Of The Century music CDs
$9.29 Two years after his debut, Jim Allio (aka James Anthony), stakes his claim on his own musical sound with his sophomore set, "Second Chance." Written, sung, produced and arranged by Jim, the 13 songs (with a few bonus surprises) are a dynamic mix of the trip hop lounge blend he began to explore on his "Better Late Than Never" CD, with bold elements of jazz, salsa, dance, alterna pop, rock and nu wave thrown explosively into the caldron. Advance listeners have commented on the variety of sounds and killer beats here, as well as recognizing the musical journey you will go on. Plus the songs are so damn catchy! My journey to becoming a songwriter and recording artist began probably when I was a young boy singing along with Lesley Gore and The Supremes in front of the mirror in my downstairs bedroom. Decades later, a friend sold me a four-track recorder and I began fooling around with doubling my voice and singing harmony in a two-dude duet. This led me to take a voice class from Lucy Kinchen at Laney College where I began to connect my spirituality with singing. I became friends with local Oakland hiphop producer, Skarlo Paine, and he would play me tracks from his debut CD as we drove around The O. I would riff over the tracks and eventually Paine asked me to contribute lyrics and vocals to one of the tracks, which became the song, "Help Me" on his record. One thing led to another and I was singing back up on Cuneo P's dance-metal recordings and doing duets at Laney with local jazz chanteuse, Paula, still taking voice class. Skarlo suggested I take some of the lyrics I'd been writing for years and think about doing my own CD. Together we collaborated on "Better Late Than Never," with him creating the tracks and the two of us writing the songs and doing the vocal arrangements. Gradually over the course of 18 months, the project came fully together. Originally, the plan was to do "Second Chance" with Skarlo Paine, but it didn't work out. He did do a bit of sweetening on the first track, "Damaged Goods," but I ended up doing all the production and arrangements ...
