| | Herb Alpert What Now My Love CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Classic Jazz Archive CD music
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive ...

| | Steve Tyrell This Time Of The Year CD (2002)
Classic Jazz Archive CD music
$6.09 Steve Tyrell has attracted enough attention for his two regular albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, that he is almost beyond journalists' usual tack of describing a new singer's voice by who he sounds like; pretty soon, they'll be saying that other singers sound like him. But it remains true that if you have never heard him but you are familiar with Dr. John, your first reaction upon hearing him is likely to be that you are listening to Dr. John. Well, maybe a younger Dr. John, and one whose accent isn't quite as swampy. But the basic elements -- the grit and gravel in the tone, the slurred, deep South phrasing -- are much the same. Of course, Tyrell comes by the sound of his voice honestly, hailing from Houston, TX, and boasting a musical career (albeit, behind the scenes) as long as Dr. John's. But it remains true that Dr. John got there first, and so the comparison remains inevitable. As on his regular albums, Tyrell lines up a cast of jazz heavyweights for these small-group sessions, ...
| | Joe Beck Finger Painting CD (1995)
Classic Jazz Archive music CDs
$15.05 Having been employed as a sideman by everyone from Miles Davis, Joe Farrell, and Gene Ammons to James Brown, Esther Phillips, and Gloria Gaynor, Joe Beck has an impressive résumé when it comes to supporting others. But his output as a leader has been erratic. The guitarist's own catalog is much smaller than it should be, and he hasn't lived up to his full potential as a soloist. One of the decent CDs that Beck recorded in the '90s was Finger Painting, a fusion/post-bop effort boasting Bill Evans (not the ...

| | Claude Bolling Drum Is A Woman CD (2005)
Classic Jazz Archive music CDs
$16.79 Recorded live at the Theatre National De Chaillot, Paris, France on April 4 & 5, 1996.
In 1956, Duke Ellington's show A Drum Is a Woman was broadcast on television. Although utilizing the Ellington orchestra, the emphasis was on a somewhat abstract and bizarre story line involving characters named Madame Zajj and Carribee Joe. Zajj, who is born as Joe's drum, travels the world and becomes famous but still dreams of Carribee Joe, who preferred to remain in the jungle. Forty years after the Ellington telecast, French bandleader Claude Bolling revived the story for a show and this recording. Jeffery Smith is the narrator (at times sounding a bit like Duke Ellington), and he shares the vocals with Laika and Francine Romain while joined by the Claude Bolling Orchestra. The revival performance is well done, but the original ...
