Closed Captioned; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Sensor Matic Steven Spielberg's award-winning film is a brutal look at the devastation that war leaves behind, both physically and emotionally. Standouts in the film include Tom Hanks as the seemingly hardened leader, Ed Burns as the cocky New Yorker, and Jeremy Davies as the wanna-be writer who'd rather be carrying a typewriter than a gun. A closing battle nearly matches the opening scene's in impact, and Spielberg concludes matters with a present-tense bookend, as in SCHINDLER'S LIST, that drills the point home. Director Steven Spielberg's World War II tour de force chronicles the journey of a GI squad on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), the unit is under orders to track down a soldier, Private Ryan (Matt Damon), so he might return home to his mother in America, where she is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons to the war. The first unforgettable 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy invasion as Miller. his second-in-command, Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore), and the others in the unit land at Omaha Beach. Before the film began shooting, Hanks and the actors in his squad went through a one-week boot camp in the woods. All the actors, except Hanks, wanted to quit, but Hanks rallied their spirits by reminding them of the incredible tribulations endured by the real veterans of World War II. Production designer Tom Sanders found a beach in Ireland that perfectly matched the landscape of Normandy's. Spielberg gave great credit to the Irish army who helped re-create the Omaha Beach scenes. Theatrical release: July 24, 1998.
The film was shot in England, Ireland, and France.
Estimated budget: $70 million.
The film grossed more than $215 million at the domestic box office and nearly $375 million worldwide.
Steven Spielberg won an Academy Award for Best Director for SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.
In preparation for their roles, the actors went through a week of boot camp with retired Marine Dale Dye-- except Matt Damon (Private Ryan), who was excused from the training so that a real-life resentment of him by the others would be formed.
D day, June 6, 1944, was the largest invasion in military history--175,000 soldiers of the Allied Expeditionary Force invaded Normandy.
Spielberg was honored with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, presented to him by Prince Andrew for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, in Los Angeles in November 2000. $12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.
100 minute Japanese animation DVD. Master thief Lupin III, aka the wolf, and his right-hand gunman Jigen are hot o n the trail of a counterfeiter who swindled them...but they find far more than they are looking for when their search leads them to the secluded European country of Cagliostro.

| | Broadway Theatre Archive - The Patriots DVD (2003)
Saving Private Ryan video
$16.79 The Broadway Theatre Archive presents another program in its series of televised plays from the 60s to the 80s. This historical play examines the conflicts that arose early in the political history of the United States between two founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. The question revolved around how does one unite a common set of national principles among the different founders, and Hamilton, a cynical Federalist, and Jefferson, the more hopeful populist, embodied this issue.
This play is a gutsy, real look at the bitter discord between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton in the early days of the Republic (New York Post). The play focuses on the conflict between the political and social goals of these two brilliant men: Jefferson, the far-sighted, egalitarian-minded democrat; and Hamilton, the short-tempered federalist with limited faith in the common man.

$57.29 Broadcast in the U.S. as My Partner the Ghost, the highly original 1960s British television series RANDALL AND HOPKIRK DECEASED centers around a pair of otherworldly crime-solvers. Private detectives Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt) and Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) are longtime partners working on a routine case when Hopkirk is killed by a hit-and-run driver. In a unique twist, Hopkirk's white-suited ghost stays on Earth to help Randall solve cases--and keep tabs on his attractive widow Jean (Annette Andre). This 4-volume box set collects the first 13 episodes of the daring cult-favorite created by Dennis Spooner (UFO, Doctor Who) and produced by Monty Berman (The Saint).
Gumshoes Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt) and Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) don't let a little thing like death get in the way of an investigation. Marty is killed in an investigation and, to Jeff's surprise, his ghost shows up to help him nab the murderer. These are the first 13 episodes from the series.

Saving Private Ryan DVD
$14.49 In many ways a male version of Vidor's STELLA DALLAS, THE CHAMP also works overtime on the tear ducts. Wallace Beery stars as Andy "Champ" Purcell, the former heavyweight champion, now down and out, who is kept alive by the devotion of his young son, Dink (Jackie Cooper). The champ is trying to make a comeback but continues to backslide into drinking and gambling in Tijuana dives, despite the efforts of Dink and his friends to save the boxer from himself. While gambling, the Champ does manage to win a horse, and while he and Dink are at the track, the boy runs into his mother, Linda (Irene Rich), although neither knows the other. When she speaks with the Champ, he agrees that the boy would be better off living with her and her wealthy husband, Tony (Hale Hamilton). Hiding his love behind a mask of indifference, the Champ convinces the boy to go to the country to live with his mother. But Dink can't abide the separation and runs away to rejoin his father in time for the biggest fight of his career. An unusually understated and affecting performance by Beery along with good work by Cooper erase some of the triteness of the melodrama, which must have spoken powerfully to depression-era audiences whose numbers undoubtedly included more than a few "Champs" struggling to care for their children.
Academy Award winning Best Actor Wallace Beery plays the washed-up prizefighter Andy "Champ" Purcell who's making a ring comeback to provide for his devoted nine-year-old son, Dink.
