Originally released in 1995, HORMONE HOTEL is an album from U.K. based indie-rock act Bandit Queen.
The biting, aggressive swing of Hormone Hotel unfortunately never got the attention it should have upon the album's release in 1995, given the critical/commercial cachet of such acts as P J Harvey, Hole, and Elastica at nearly the same point in time. Bandit Queen's failure to make a mark was either surprising or, alternately, typical of an industry and media-base willing to go only so far but little more in accepting female-led bands. Regardless, all it takes is an initial spin of the opening track, "Scorch," -- a great rocker that lives up to its name with a fierce yet controlled lead vocal from Goddings -- to realize that Bandit Queen deserved a wider audience somewhere. Pat Collier and John Robb, each separately doing another fine job of producing, bring out Galley's drum punch with both clarity and impact, while Goddings' guitar and Wolstenholme's bass kick and snarl just so. The trio whips up a series of tight numbers that draw on everything from reggae to the glorious Pixies/Nirvana loud/soft/loud combination. Goddings' proud, in-your-face and often openly lesbian lyrics exude a smart sass, while her lower-voiced singing could draw comparisons from Chrissie Hynde to Lynn Canfield, yet still has its own timbre and feel. Among the many highlights is the menacing "Give It to the Dog," which switches between a slowly building verse interspersed with sudden guitar bursts and the more conventionally slamming chorus. The slightly queasy "Overture for Beginners," with its heavily reverbed guitar and Goddings' sweetly wistful vocal (singing some distinctly unsweet lyrics) anchored to a charging, lovely chorus, is simply a treasure; it is perhaps the biggest should-have-been hit from the album. When the chorus of "Big Sugar Emotional Thing" completes the couplet with "My heart goes zing, zing, zing," another perfect blow for rock's heartfelt simplicity at its best is struck. ~ Ned Raggett

Alternative Press (1/96, p.73) - "Imagine the Breeders fronted by Alison Moyet. That's a good approximation of this Manchester, England trio, which combines a combustible, bass-fueled cocktail with the smooth, soulful-but-scarred vocals of Tracy Godding....What Bandit Queen do best is make taboos danceable and bring humor to vengeful warnings..." Option (3-4/96, p.93) - "...worth checking into soley for the atypical intelligence and integrity of its lyrics..." Bandit Queen Hormone Hotel Songs | 1. | Scorch | $0.99 | |

Hormone Hotel album
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute ...

$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm ...
