The Datsuns present OUTTA SIGHT/OUTTA MIND, featuring two bonus tunes, on this Japanese import edition.
When the Datsuns released their first album in 2002, it was in the wake of the garage punk explosion kick started by the White Stripes and the Strokes, so this New Zealand quartet was lumped in as fellow travelers -- an understandable miscatogrization, but one that doesn't quite describe what the band is. There's barely a trace of garage or punk in the Datsuns. They're a '70s heavy rock band to the core. That was unusual when The Datsuns hit the streets in 2002, which garnered attention since it was, for want of a better term, a novelty, but within a year, there was a flood of bands that partied like it was 1973, even if nearly all of them were born closer to 1983. Many of them turned out to be better than the Datsuns, too, particularly the AC/DC-worshipping Jet and the cheerfully ridiculous Darkness, who trumped the New Zealand quartet in two significant ways -- they could write songs and riffs. That's may be a little unfair, since there are moments on The Datsuns where the band makes some pretty invigorating rock & roll, but two years later on their second album, Outta Sight/Outta Mind, they are a spent force. They're still stuck in the past, but where they could occasionally recall Deep Purple on their debut, they sound as turgid as Cactus throughout Outta Sight/Outta Mind. Former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones does his best as a producer, giving the album a clean yet heavy sound, but the problem lies with the quartet, who flail about on 12 songs as they ape classic heavy rock without replicating it. Much of the problem is that the group is far too busy, relying on skittering single-note riffs when big power chords would not only hit harder, they'd be more memorable, instead of jumping around too often to create an impression. Lead singer Dolf De Datsun does make an impression with his thin, high-strung caterwauls, but he lacks flair. He, like his lead guitarist, Phil Datsun, is a faceless journeyman, and now that there are more hard rock bands -- both ironic and not so much so -- on the market in 2004, the Datsuns no longer seem like a fresh novelty. They seem like a garden-variety hard rock band, one that would have been generic and forgettable in 1974, and one that is generic and forgettable in 2004. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Japanese edition of 2004 album is scheduled for earliest release and includes two bonus tracks, 'Charging Rhino' and 'Good Luck... Your Gonna Need It'. V2. Outta Sight/Outta Mind album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, creating cheerful genre-bending where Sweet gives way to the Scissor Sisters, ...

$15.30 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the ...

Outta Sight/Outta Mind album
$20.99 The original Affinity essentially survived for just one album, a superb, jazz-tinged effort released on the Vertigo label in 1971, and subsequently reissued on several occasions since then -- a cottage industry that seems to have spawned more interest in the band today than they ever attracted during their career. Certainly few people were aware that the group continued on following the departure (for a solo career) of vocalist Linda Hoyle later in 1971, but this set -- aptly titled for the timespan it covers -- not only documents the band's further activities, it also suggests that their ultimate demise was far from timely. With Vivienne McAuliffe proving a more than ample replacement, Affinity continued both gigging and recording, and this collection of previously unreleased demos and outtakes finds the band in excellent form. One can only imagine how great they ...
