| | John Hines In The Pocket CD John Hines Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
John Hines is a fine hard bop-oriented trombonist from Colorado. For this CD he joins with pianist/keyboardist Michael Pagan, bassist Mike Williamson, and drummer Rob Ward for straight-ahead standards and complementary group originals. Guest trumpeter/flügelhornist Hugh Ragin guests on three numbers (playing muted à la Miles Davis on "I Could Write a Book"), and singer Angela Holley is featured on "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square." Other highlights include the catchy "In the Pocket," an uptempo "Secret Love," the harmonies between the two horns on "Central Park West," and Hines' warm tone throughout. The music is pleasing, swinging, and often infectious; this CD is well worth acquiring. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD's title phrase "In The Pocket" is meant to express that moment in music where everything lines up, fits neatly into place and feels right for both the players and the listeners. Trombonist John Hines' CD is all about playing solidly in the change

| In The Pocket Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) In The Pocket, Indeed! By George W. Carroll
In the pocket, indeed!! This CD project contains the sweet smell of mainstream jazz in the guise of one John Hines, trombonist mextraordinaire. The melodic lines, solos, reharmonizations, sound, et al are profound, as John's group interprets Ellington's eternal jazz ballad, ''In A Sentimental Mood.''
With tongue in cheek, I fess up to a little editorial conflict of interest here, as ''Sentimental'' is one of my favorite Duke tunes which I invariably play @ all my jazz gigs. However, the group hit me right where it counts with their particular poignant rendering of Ellington's
lovely tune. Hines plays his ax with prime advanced harmonic ideas, certainly with liquid phrasing, & an attendant voicelike, yet abstract sound. His robust & bright sonority interacts with ease
with his group as he deftly weaves his wonderful web of solo
artistry. My Vote...........A resounding Yea to this fine disc!!

In The Pocket music CDs
$14.69 In the '90s there were so many tributes to great blues and jazzmen that it's easy to balk when you see that the great guitarist Grant Green was given a tribute album on Evidence during the late '90s. After all, Green's talent was light, gentle, and elusive -- it was simple but elegant; many guitarists couldn't get that right and, theoretically, ...
| | Django Reinhardt Nuages CD (1997)
In The Pocket songs
$7.29 Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Services, New York, New York).
That Django Reinhardt was an original and a virtuoso was impressive enough. But what is astounding about his playing is that it was accomplished by someone who only had the use of two fingers on his left hand; he had been severely burned as a young man and lost the use of his ring and pinkie fingers. 45 years after his death there are still French guitarists who, in an attempt to get the same sound that ...

$14.79 A group of street performers, acrobats and dancers converged in San Diego in the mid-Nineties, integrating their exceptional talents in a performance concept that blurs boundaries between theatre and circus. The prevailing "try anything" spirit amongst the international troupe allowed an innovative art form to emerge, with a genuinely fresh script and stunning theatrical style.Originally performed in San Diego for an audience of 400 in March of 1996 - with a firm commitment to it's improvisational roots - iL CiRCo has evolved to become an international sensation. iL CiRCo travels around the globe and has been showcased for nearly 5 million people since that day in 1996. This music is a tribute to the talent that continues to inspire audiences as they share the dream."Viaggio" is a story of an inspiring journey. It is ...

| | Dirk Hamilton Meet Me At The Crux CD (1978) Bonus Tracks
In The Pocket music CDs
$10.49 Dirk Hamilton's first recording for Elektra Records, Meet Me at the Crux, expands on the promise of his sporadically brilliant first two releases. This time out, with a core band providing solid backing throughout, Hamilton achieves a cohesive sound to support his material, which -- as always -- can be biting, sensitive, strange, and funny. Tales of love, culture, and society gone awry, as well as the woes of the unsung artist, had long been a staple of the '70s singer/songwriter, but Hamilton has always had the ability to bring something new to these well-worn subjects. He also possesses a soulful edge, reminiscent of Van Morrison, in his acoustic-based mix of folk, pop, rock, and R&B, which also distinguishes him from the pack. This includes instrumental, melodic, and rhythmic hooks that were scarce on his ABC work, but at the same time, the wit and insight that made the best parts of these records so special is still there. Tighter songs and arrangements also give Hamilton the freedom -- like Morrison -- to play with the words, vocally tugging and stretching them, pushing his voice and lyrics to the limit. Cuts such as the melancholy "Billboard on the Moon," the slightly twisted title track, and the closer "Every Inch a Moon" are the cream of an album filled with highlights. Though it failed to do much commercially and has been deleted for years, Meet Me at the Crux is among the finest the '70s singer/songwriter genre has to offer, and is worth looking for. ~ Brett Hartenbach
