THE MORNING GLORY RAMBLERS is a jewel in the crown of the formidable discographies of Norman and Nancy Blake. Though the two have enjoyed an ongoing personal and professional relationship since the 1970s, their duo records are few and far between, which makes this outing all the more enjoyable. Norman participated in the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack, and both Norman and Nancy performed in the attendant DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN tours. Not surprisingly, the revitalized interest in early-20th-century rural-American forms sparked by these activities informs this 2004 release.
From the daguerreotype-like photo of the couple on the cover to the choice versions of old-time classics within, THE MORNING GLORY RAMBLERS draws a line straight back to the beginning of the Americana tradition. Treatments of songs by Johnny Matthias (1836's "The Way Worn Traveler"), the Carter Family ("Sunny Side of Life"), and Hank Williams (the little-known "Men with Broken Hearts") play out the evolution of folk and country. There are a handful of modern tunes here, but even these fit into the Blakes' age-worn, mountain-music fabric. Directly affecting, unpretentious, and wonderfully performed, this album is like a glimpse into the still-beating heart of American history.
Features songs popularized by the Carter Family.
Live RecordingUncut (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Blake's musicianship and touch...is impeccable..." Dirty Linen (p.57) - "The richness of tone, the precision of each down stroke, the rapid-fire single-note bits, the flawless intonation: This is not the picking of a front-room amateur..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "17 excellently-played old-time folk traditionals about God, love and dying with Carter Family connections." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Morning Glory Ramblers album
$14.85 An album recorded live in Paris, at the famous Elysee Montmartre, on February 17th, 2004.Let's face the reality! These days the melodic power metal is not the hippest style of 'hard rock' anymore. Out of the huge wave of bands coming from all over the world since the late 90's, just a few will really stay. Although many of them like to sing, only the strong survive! and the list is short: HammerFall from Sweden, Edguy from Germany, Sonata Arctica from Finland, Rhapsody from Italy and, why not, Manigance from France! Faithful to their image, the band from the city of Pau have been cleaver enough to not overload the market with various side projects or solo records. Just as united as in the early days of their career, when they had no record deal and were just playing clubs in the South West of France, these five French guys spent their time, in their quiet little town far way from Paris, on the writing and the recording their ...
