| | Mama's & The Papa's Greatest Hits CD (1998) Remastered
Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life
$10.39 All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Joseph F. Laredo. Recording information: LA, CA. Photographer: Jim Marshall . This is the single-CD successor to Creeque Alley, the double-disc career retrospective issued in the early '90s. All of the hits from "California Dreamin'" to "Dream a Little Dream of Me" are here, along with their more celebrated album tracks, and the notes by Joseph Laredo provide a decent overview of the group's formation and history. The records have been remastered yet again, although the level of improvement over Creeque Alley seems modest (Creeque Alley sounded really good) compared with that double disc's improvement over the earlier, wholly inadequate masters from ...
| | Best Of Glass Tiger: Air Time CD (1993) Import
Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life
$10.49 Includes liner notes by members of Glass Tiger. Liner Note Author: Tim Trombley. Glass Tiger first appeared in 1986, the year that Cutting Crew and the Outfield also debuted on pop radio. What do these bands have in common besides being from the same graduating class? Glass Tiger, like Cutting Crew and the Outfield, roamed between Top 40 rock and mainstream new wave. The Best of Glass Tiger: Air Time collects choice cuts from a group that is usually remembered for one song, "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)." Probably inspired by Simple Minds' similarly titled "Don't You (Forget About Me)" a year earlier, "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)" still sounds like Wham!, mainly because Alan Frew's vocals during the chorus are nearly identical to George Michael's. Bryan Adams' prominent cameo -- there's no mistaking that raspy voice -- epitomizes the band's ...
| | Icebreaker Distant Early Warning CD (1999)
Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life
$13.39 Icebreaker: Alexander Perls, Simon Break. Simon Break and Alexander Perls' first geopolitical concept record names itself after the system of radars located in northern Canada and Alaska that were built during the cold war to alert NATO countries of Soviet nuclear strikes. This instrumental song cycle assembled from keyboards, organs, pianos, and a series of drones most resembles the chilled eeriness of Broadcast's most atmospheric side, Steve Reich, or even Brian Eno. Icebreaker are excellent at making such an isolated, barren landscape seem so warm and lulling, placing haunting melodies every so often enough amid the cavernous drones to make the record go down more as an ambient pop record than one that merely fades into the background with whatever incidental noises fill out a room -- passing vehicles, chirping birds, creaking floors, appliance hum. "Melody for NATO" -- originally found on a split 7" with former associates Piano Magic for Debut -- is the disc's opener and the most involving of the eight tracks, built on a fragile, rolling melody that constantly shifts above sensitive percussion. The track gradually dims the way a room does when daylight dissipates, with the melodic tones warping into scratchy AM-interference territory. The duo ...
| | Donny Osmond This Is The Moment CD (2001)
Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life
$14.79 Live Recording
Personnel includes: Donny Osmond, Rosie O'Donnell, Vanessa Williams (vocals); Jeff Mironov (acoustic & electric guitars); Emily Mitchell (harp); Lawrence Feldman (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone); Charlie Pillow (flute, tenor saxophone); Shamus Egan (pennywhistle); Roger Rosenberg (baritone saxophone); Jim Hynes, Lew Soloff (trumpet); Bob Carlisle (French horn); Dave Taylor, Mike Davis (trombone); Marcus Rojas (tuba); Rob Mouncey (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Philippe Saisse (keyboards, programming); Robbie Kondor (keyboards); Neil Jason, Larry Glazner (bass); Shawn Pelton (drums); Vaneese Thomas, Rob Mathes, Jill Dell'Abate (background vocals). Recorded at Right Track Studio, New York, New York. Personnel: Robbie Kondor (keyboards). Arranger: Robbie Kondor. Donny Osmond has a tendency to take decades off from his recording career. He let most of the 1980s go by, presumably to clear the air after his teen idol days of the 1970s, before re-launching himself as a dance-pop singer with his self-titled Capitol album in 1989, then took off most of the '90s after the relative disappointment of its follow-up, Eyes Don't Lie. In the meantime, he gained a measure of legitimacy as a musical theater performer with a long-running portrayal of the title character in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. By the end of the decade, with the cancellation of the syndicated talk show he shared with his sister Marie, Osmond was again available to take another chance in the record stores. And so, here is This Is the Moment, the concept of which is to take show tunes of various vintages and given them contemporary pop arrangements. Of course, that's what pop artists used to do all the time with show music, until it fell out of favor at the end of the 1960s. Osmond and veteran producer Phil Ramone may not be trying to resurrect that tradition so much as they are trying to craft a new, more respectable ...
