Scotland's Beta Band made their name at the tail end of the 1990s by mixing contemporary electronic production techniques with '60s/'70s prog/psych influences and utilizing an inclusive and eclectic post-Beck aesthetic. Three albums in, they're still mixing and matching like drug-addled patchwork quilters; funky synth bass rubs up against Beach Boys-like harmonies and jangling Britpop guitars, while a penchant for sonic experimentalism nestles with surprising ease alongside more conventional songwriting values. Despite the gloriously hither-and-yon approach, though, there's more of a consistent and substantive feel on HEROES TO ZEROS than could be found on its predecessor, HOT SHOTS II, boding well for the group's longevity.

When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came pouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love.
The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut delectable, as the melodies flow hither and thither, a subtle rapture confident in its ability to entrance. Delicately crafted yet explosively poetic lines again abound (such as "secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred"), and by the time the sing-a-long of "So Says I" kicks in, the die is cast. The centerpiece is "Take Me Out" (a U.K. top ten hit), which plays out a series of come-ons between rival assassins, over what begins as a sneering slice of mid-1990s Britpop, only to morph into a funky dance-floor tune. Among the first bands to use the studio as an instrument, Germany's Faust stitched engrossing albums from bits of improvised ensemble play, primitive electronics, lovely folk motifs, lo-fi musique concrete, and fragments of punk, psychedelic, jazz, and progressive music. THE FAUST TAPES is even more of a splendid mishmash than the earlier FAUST and SO FAR, as the album is sequenced as a single track. As haphazard as TAPES' construction might seem, with an excess of ideas that almost seems to have tumbled out of the Faust 5 at random, one must realize that "construction" is the operative word here.
