In the 21st century, the power metal scene isn't just veteran headbangers like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensr˙che, it's also power metal revival bands such as Symphony X, Iron Savior, Morifade, DragonForce, and Rhapsody. The difference between the older power metallers and the younger power metal revival acts is not a stylistic difference but rather, a matter of when a band came along; stylistically, the power metal revival combos that were formed in the '90s or 2000s are consistently mindful of the power metal artists who started recording in the late '70s or '80s. That is certainly true of the Sweden-based vocalist of Hammerfall, Joacim Cans, who maintains his devotion to old-school power metal throughout his solo project Beyond the Gates. This 2004 release offers no acknowledgment of post-'80s trends in alternative metal; there are no chugging or downtuned guitars on Beyond the Gates, and the disc is totally oblivious to alt metal favorites like Sevendust, Korn, Slipknot, and Limp Bizkit. When Beyond the Gates is playing, one is transported back to a time when Ronald Reagan was president of the United States, Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of England and power metal was ruled by the melodic yet forceful likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Grim Reaper, and Queensr˙che. For all their intensity, those old-school headbangers were undeniably musical and intricate, and the same goes for Cans. Melody and aggression are equally important on Beyond the Gates, which has a real sense of craftsmanship and is never about brutality for the sake of brutality. This highly derivative CD won't score any points for originality, but it's an enjoyably decent, if predictable, effort that will appeal to headbangers who still hold their old Savatage and King Diamond albums in high regard. ~ Alex Henderson

| Beyond The Gates Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) if hammerfall drops anytime soon hopefully hammerfall won't go away anytime soon or at all, but if they do then joacim cans has a solid future as a solo artist if he can continue to put out albums like this. my one and only problem with this cd? the last song "forever ends". W.T.F.!!!!!!!!!!!! how in the name of all that is metal did this song get on this cd???? it sounds like it should run at the end credits of a childrens movie!! ponies painted up and ready to run????? jeeeze!! alright enough of that. outside that glitch, this is a great metal album. buy it, and CRANK IT LOUD!! Beyond The Gates album
$13.29 Hammerfall's grandiose heavy metal posturing only narrowly avoids the type of self-parody exhibited by Manowar (for that matter, the bandmembers' outfits are only slightly less ridiculous than Manowar's swords-and-loincloths look). But fans of the genre probably won't care -- the band performs its soaring power metal anthems with spirit, dedication, and heroic execution on Crimson Thunder. This is pure classicism here; Hammerfall devotedly adheres to the genre guidelines of '80s power metal, without any attempts toward innovation. Includes an inspired cover version of Chastain's obscure "Angel of Mercy" and a rather pointless take on Kiss' already overdone "Detroit Rock City." ~ Andy Hinds
2002 album includes one exclusive bonus track, a cover of the KISS classic 'Detroit Rock City'. Nuclear ...

| | Hammerfall Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken CD (2005)
Beyond The Gates songs
$14.69 As helpfully pointed out in the title, Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken sees Swedish metal institution Hammerfall hoisting aloft the torch of power metal (unbent, unbowed, etc.) for the fifth full-studio album of their career. But "power" metal may no longer the best tag with which to describe the band, whose material here ("Blood Bound," "Fury of the Wild," "Born to Rule," etc.) is really better described as classic, vintage, or better yet, timeless heavy metal, if you will. Extract any telltale signs of studio technology or audio fidelity and the band's sound really could have originated in the '80s or '90s, as easily as the '00s. And even more telling is the relative absence of speed metal drumming, used here only for small portions -- not the entirety -- of structurally varied songs like "Secrets" and "Take the Black." This may sound like a silly little detail, but it really does liberate Hammerfall from unfair comparison to a slew of boring, cliché-bound contemporaries. Sure, "Never, Ever" is a cliché in itself for representing the textbook heavy metal ballad; but then what percentage of heavy metal bands have resisted this temptation since the establishment of the infamous "Stairway to Heaven" rule (whereupon all ...
| | Primal Fear Seven Seals CD (2005)
Beyond The Gates album
$10.35 Love it or hate it, power metal is here to stay; and no band has done more staying than German supergroup Primal Fear, who arrive at their sixth studio release, Seven Seals (and seventh release overall, if you count 2002's Horrorscope EP -- hence the title), showing just as much conviction and, er, power, as ever before. What's more, where recent efforts had found singer Ralf Scheepers (ex-Gamma Ray, near-Rob Halford replacement) somewhat uninspired and prone to merely reminding you, again and again, how gloriously metallic metal is, here he proceeds to discuss how gloriously metallic things like demons, angels, and roller coasters are. Yes, we're hardly talking thought-provoking social commentary here, but when it comes to heroic, unapologetic, chest-pounding Teutonic metallurgy, it really doesn't get much better than album standouts like "Rollercoaster," "Evil Spell," and "The Immortal Ones," with their anthemic riffs, soaring choruses, and majestic backing synthesizer chords. The title track itself is a little more unusual, featuring a stuttering, mild-mannered melody at its core, and, although otherwise familiar in ...
| | Hammerfall Threshold CD (2006)
Beyond The Gates CD music
$13.69 Following the unnaturally extended layoff enforced by guitarist Oscar Dronjak's motorcycle accident in 2003, Swedish heavy metal traditionalists Hammerfall waited barely a year between their eventual return with fifth album, Chapter V in 2005, and the release of LP number six, Threshold, in 2006. This suddenly rushed release schedule -- though likely resulting from nothing more than a backlog of pre-written material, ready to come out -- takes something of an uncertain turn on Threshold's first few numbers, which comprise a decent but terribly predictable title track; a lackluster autopilot job and a repetitive chorus in "The Fire Burns Forever"; and a lead-footed crawl through "Rebel Inside," ...
