Lest you believe Little Dragon lack an aesthetic spine, their shift away from low-key left-field hip-hop, plaintive piano ballads, and acoustic jazz--a combination that helped make their debut a cult classic--seems more natural after a couple spins. There's no way around the fact that most of MACHINE DREAMS is icy electro-pop, but it is not as if the truly singular Yukimi Nagano, an enamoring vocalist, has switched to drone mode, forsaking her grounding in R&B. She has kind of perked up, in fact, with her hooks carrying more lift to suit her band's rubbery rhythms and liquid synthesizer patterns. Indispensable global fusion music from Claus Zundel (AKA "The Brave"), this fifth outing (hence the title) finds the reclusive Spanish wizard stepping back and letting the virtuosic flamenco guitar of fellow Ibiza resident Paco Fernandez take center stage. Also on board is the African singer Luna Mohamed, who lends exotic vocal caresses to several tracks, and the mournful cello of Eric Plummetaz. As with previous B-Tribe work, the songs flow seamlessly together in a delirious blend of Gypsy camp romance and chill-out electronica. The centerpiece here is the haunting "Ode to Dolores Del Rio" which opens with a thunderously distorted bass string rumble before contrasting melancholy passages of wooden flute with effect-laden guitar and gentle chimes. "Anika" and "Angelic Voices" both benefit from Mohamed's crystal clear vocal improvisations, which contrast with the group's trademark male Gypsy wailings. Principally recorded at Ocean Groove Studios, Miami Beach, Florida and Mediterranneo Studios, San Jose, Ibiza from 1996-1997. The third album from the Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters (German producer Claus Zundel, or "The Brave") leaves its predecessors' predilection for German techno beats and English vocals far behind. Instead, the emphasis distinctly moves from the dance club to the bedroom, aided by Paco Fernandez's flamenco guitar. "Alegria" benefits from a slow, captivatingly steady beat that gently and unceasingly propels Fernandez's impassioned arpeggios and Arrantza Aida's wailing vocals. The title track marches steadily in the manner of Ravel's "Bolero" towards a climax just over the hill, and is in no particular hurry to get there (what lover would have it any other way?). "Tribute to J.S. Bach" expertly blends a dying flamenco guitar with mysterious, ominous synth noises to profoundly melancholy effect.
