(1 Customer Review)
After ten years, Antietam returns with their seventh album Victory Park, an indie pop record that plays like Yo La Tengo in the sunniest of moods. While "The Annunciation" moves with a familiar groove, descended straight from the Velvet Underground and the late-'80s Hoboken scene, "Attract Mode" is actually closer to the '60s summer pop outfit the Free Design. Victory Park is never as aggressive as the band's critically acclaimed 1990 record, Burgoo, but this simmering rock and dream pop album takes an appropriate stride for a band that has been playing together since 1986. "Wish Factor" makes Antietam suddenly sound resonant again, in the same manner that the entirety of Murray Street did for Sonic Youth. With subtle, almost shoegazer tunes like "Blue Rose Melancholy," Antietam is unlikely to pick up new fans from the legions of pop punk kids who think the new Green Day record is nostalgic. But those who remember what indie rock meant in the early '90s, and either missed Antietam or forgot about them, will be blissfully transported back to the time of bands like Galaxie 500 and Teenage Fanclub; a time when the Afghan Whigs and the Breeders were on MTV's Alternative Nation. In a way, Victory Park is Antietam's best record, whether it is relevant to the times of its release or not, and it's a little bit sad that the band is not as well-known as Luna. ~ Charles Spano

Victory Park album
$33.25 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand ...
| | Wonder Stuff Live At The BBC CDs (2007) England
Victory Park CD music
$26.79 Indie undergrounders turned grebo heroes turned pop monsters the Wonder Stuff's alternate history is revealed via their British radio appearances on BBC Sessions. We first meet the Stuff in late 1987, playing a quartet of songs recorded for Radio One DJ Janice Long, all of which would reappear on their debut album The Eight Legged Groove Machine. At the time, the group were already ferociously finding their stylistic feet, and an insouciance worthy of the Small Faces helped lay the foundation for the entire Brit-pop movement to come. By the summer of 1991, when the Stuff recorded their next radio session, they were already huge stars, and their pop transformation was complete. A year later, the BBC caught them in all their glory at that summer's ...

| | Lloyd Cole Live At The BBC, Vol. 1 CD (2007) England
Victory Park songs
$18.05 Live at the BBC, Vol. 1 gathers all of the BBC radio sessions recorded by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions around the time of their instant classic debut album Rattlesnakes. (Vol. 2, released at the same time, contains the sessions related to second album Easy Pieces and a full 1986 live set recorded at that year's Glastonbury Festival.) Opening with a pre-LP set on Saturday Live -- signed to a major label almost as soon as they were formed, they were never indie enough to rate a Peel Session -- the first three songs are the sound of a band in its tentative stages. Opening with a cover of Television's "Glory" makes their major influences just a bit too clear, and on both "Patience" and debut single "Perfect Skin," Cole's oddly mannered vocals clash a bit with the band's uncharacteristically ragged sound. By the time of a four-song set on the Richard Skinner set, Cole's vocals are much improved and the band's playing is considerably tighter; only the stripped-down ...

| | Elvis Costello King Of America CD (1986) Digipak; Special Edition
Victory Park album
$12.65 On KING OF AMERICA, the ever-restless Costello reinvented himself yet again, using his Christian name (Declan MacManus) in the credits, and employing the other Elvis' old backing band (as well as Ray Brown and Earl Palmer) for his most reflective, mature-sounding album thus far. The overall sound here is closer to Costello's folk-rock roots (The Band, the Grateful Dead) than he'd ever dared come before, and the songs trade elliptical wordplay for considered emotional statements.Though the Attractions appear only on "Suit of Lights," their influence is felt on the album's poppiest tune "Lovable." Elsewhere, Costello offers poignant country ballads ("Indoor FIreworks," also expertly covered by Nick Lowe), jazz/blues torch songs ("Poisoned Rose") and even a bit of '60s Britbeat (an effective recasting of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"). In short, KING OF AMERICA contains some of ...
